Neighbour finds our christmas lights "annoying"...

I live in an affuent area but there are still a fair few lights up, Ive never seen any characters but there are quite a lot of houses who are now starting to put up white lights and some coloured ones in the trees. They dont look tacky at all.
I normally just put a string of icicle type white lights across the top of our living room window and thats it.
There used to be a house about 4 miles away that did a huge scene in their front garden, a father christmas in a sleigh with reindeers going across the neighbours' houses, and in the bay window a grotto thing with animals a nativity scene and all sorts! They used to leave buckets outside for people to donate money to charity and we would always drive down there once a year to see it. Not sure if they still do it or not.
I love seeing peoples lights when Im driving home from work in the evening. I dont see what the problem is with the OPs neighbours shutting the curtains - I always shut mine as soon as it gets dark. We have a path going past our house as we live in a cul-de-sac and I dont want everyone peering in thanks!
I live in a hamlet of 25 houses, and not one has a light on. We are all respectfull of the night sky, being in an area without lights.0 -
It's for a couple of weeks for goodness sake. What a lot of miseries on this thread.
This is the typical response to anyone who doesn't like being over-the-top: "you're misterable". Actually, no I'm not - I get fully involved in Christmas festivities, my own house (inside) is decorated in fun, jolly decorations and I have a great time with family and friends at Christmas.
Does it really matter that it's for a couple of weeks? Would you like it if someone was playing loud music that you could hear every night for a "couple of weeks"? No - it would drive you insane. And excessive lights can (I'm not saying this is the case for this particular lady, but it may well be) cause the same level of distress, and it's unfair to be dismissive of that possibility.
I guess there will always be division about this issue - some people will be labelled 'miseries' while others will be labelled 'inconsiderate'. I don't think there will be a unanimous agreement!DFBX2013: 021 :j seriousDFW £0 [STRIKE] £3,374[/STRIKE] 100% Paid off

Must be very affluent then. I see decking the lights as very down market, as in the hot dog stand and car breaker houses, that's where they are seen here.

My Spanish house is in a village high in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The sky is so clear you can easily see the Milky Way.
Doesn't stop anyone having loads of fireworks at Fiestas and loads of Fireworks AND flashing lights at Christmas!!(AKA HRH_MUngo)

It seems very odd to say that you keep the lights on until 10.00 for your son and then say this!
Odd, verging on hypocritical!0 -

It's the 4th of bloody December - Christmas is 3 bloody weeks away!
This constant pushing of Christmas earlier and earlier really gets on my t!ts. Why don't we just go the whole bloody hog and start putting the tat up after the August bank holiday.
Suits me, although we wouldn't get the best out of them because it's still light till quite late.....better stick to now0 -
i cant understand why people have lights outside, why pay to light up the street, you already pay your council tax, i agree with the poster above who says the blue lights are a hazard while driving.
Mmmmm we light up the street because the council have turned off all the streets lights off at this end of our dead end street, at least the children have some light to play by for a couple of hours now xxWins in 2013 - Jan - Heinz No Noise Ketchup.0 -

Anyway, if a house opposite me was decked out like some low-rent seaside resort I think I'd just slip round under cover of darkness with a pair of pruning shears and cut the ruddy power cable. Job done.
Can you tell us where you live so I can make sure I never move there. I would hate to live somewhere with such snobs. "Not in keeping with the area"!!!!! I would hate to live somewhere like that and before you start assuming I live somewhere awful - I actually live in a nice part of EssexThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -
