Yep the garage is definately brighter,DS was trying to fit the pic on some card he was making hence the crop but will post the full pic once it's dark.Even though it's got the lit up characters on there our car blocks the view of them from the neighbour plus the garage is to the side that isn't opposite her house. And you are so right, she found something else to moan about already. She was out casually mentioning to the neighbour to the side of her that they "alarmed " her by "noisily" putting their wheelie bin out at 9 the other night and could they do it in the morning as she was awake early :rotfl:

This says it all, doesn't it? I would be struggling to avoid the temptation to tie some jingle bells on every bin on the street:rotfl:

Don't worry about her, when the other houses put their decs up it'll give her something else to moan about.....

    Have a great christmas :)
  • One word - common. Those people that walk past and you think 'enjoy' them? They're laughing at how tacky you are.

    Two words-not bothered :)

The thing is though, if you've chosen not to complain about any of these things, then you can't really use that as an excuse not to listen to her complaint about your lights. For all you know, she might be blissfully unaware that she's bothered you in the past and believe that she has been the perfect neighbour and thus is completely justified in pointing out the fact that your lights are annoying her. If you wanted her to modify her behaviour so she didn't disturb you, then you could have done so at the time, but it's a little late to bring up past misdemeanours now to retaliate against her complaint. She has no idea that you have a tally of things that you consider more of an imposition than your Christmas lights, so it's unlikely that she is taking any of them into consideration.

    Totally fair point.

We put our christmas lights up( as we have for the past seven christmases)yesterday and I have to say the house looks FAB.There is a fine string of lights round the top of the house/bay window,a string of icicles across the middle then 3 characters on the garage. We don't use the flashy onoffonoffonoff settings, they go on when hubby gets in(6pm ish) and off at about 10pm.
Anyway this morning after one night of having them on a neighbour who lives opposite wanders over whilst we are putting the tree up and says she isn't impressed that she has to close her curtains to block out the light from our decs.I didn't really know what to say tbh,we've been neighbours since we moved in and she's never mentioned it before.
I'm sat here now feeling bad but should I be?It's christmas,we have young kids who LOVE the house looking like it does and were so happy when we switched them on..are we being selfish?:o

please spare a thought for us drivers...

driving down a road with houses with lights blazing out is a hazzard, especially if your not the only one with external christmas decorations.

I almost have an urge to complain to our local council, or i'm going to have to detour road that have these lights blazing....

I'm no grinch, but too lighting blazing in your windscreen....

    What's a grinch?

I disagree about snob. It's nothing to do with snobbery.

Especially that bright LED blue that is popular now, that can really hurt a drivers eyes.

I confess I'm not a big fan of over-showy, house smothering Christmas lights, but I've never been driven to complain about any. I prefer ones that are a bit more laid back. One house along our road had one, where Father Christmas endlessly kept dropping down the chimney, but it actually looked much more like he was doing a rather tacky pole dance. I did find this amusing and was tempted to bring my observation to the house owner's attention - but I wasn't that cruel.

Rather than laughing at this lady, have you ever considered getting one of your kids or "hubby" to take her bin to to the kerb for her?
It teaches children good manners, "hubbys" too. We always do the bins for one another here.

She "was casually mentioning" so no real complaint then, just a sound that alarmed her.

Gossip then, Chinese whispers among you and your pals. Sory scrub pals, as that's snobbish. Mates?

You should value your neighbours. I hope if ever you and "hubby" need a fast trip to A&E, your lovely neighbour will be there for your other kids. I wouldn't mind betting she would be.

NB Why do I put "hubby" in inverted commas? Because I find the term insulting. I would be just as insulted by "wifey".

I am glad she is not my neighbour as she sound like a moaning miserable old biddy. I don't put lights outside my house but lots of my neighbours do and some of them really go overboard but it does not bother me - why should it? We do have flashing lights round our living room window (at the front of the house) and our tree which is in the front window has flashing lights on it. They often don't get turned off until one of us goes to bed which is never usually earlier than 11pm. No one has ever complained to us and I would not be impressed if they did.

They are only up for a short time - it's not like it's all year round. You turn the lights off in the evening, which a lot of people don't. She could close her curtains which most people do once it gets dark. Surely once you put your lights on you close your curtains - why would you want people being able to see it and also don't you want to keep the room warmer?
