The attitude of 'suck it up' MAY be appropriate here, but also it may be very mean. The lights could be causing distress, and so telling someone to suck it up is not fair.

How would you feel if I moved next door to you and for one month a year, every night between 6pm and 10pm, I blasted dance music at the top of my stereo's volume? It's only for 3/4 weeks so you'd happily suck it up?

Everyone has a right to enjoy their home in a peaceful environment, and neighbours' lights have the potential to take this away.

What about the rights of the OP and her family, to enjoy their lights?

Whilst standing up for the rights of the neighbour, you are ignoring the rights of the family.
Dear Lord, I am calling upon you today for your divine guidance and help. I am in crisis and need a supporting hand to keep me on the right and just path. My mind is troubled but I will strive to keep it set on you, as your infinite wisdom will show me the way to a just and right resolution. Amen.

I rarely think about Harrods at all, fortunately.

So where do you consider sophisticated and classy? I'll find a picture of their christmas lights. ;)

No I haven't said that at all, please read my posts if you're going to quote them. I have said that in this case, it is entirely plausible that the neighbour is being unreasonable and the lights aren't actually causing a nuisance. We just don't know as we don't have the information.

Does the OP's family have a right to enjoy lights even if they are unpleasant? Yes of course they do. But morally the situation isn't as clear cut, which is why the OP has come on here asking for opinions.

It's not a personal attack, it's an opinion about a ruddy light display.

Want a list of other things I think are tacky? Here's a few to be getting on with:

    1. Chewing gum with the mouth open
    2. Tattoos with the names of people's children/spouses
    3. Lambrusco
    4. Hen nights which involve cruising town centre bars wearing pink cowboy accessories
    5. Any food that's covered in breadcrumbs and formed into a shape meant to resemble something else
    6. Going out in public with nightwear on when there's no necessity to do so (e.g. one's house is on fire)
    7. Orange spray tans
    8. Kiss and tell stories
    9. Fibreglass body kits on anything other than track race cars
    10. Clothes with the designer's logo plastered all over them

I probably have another few thousand....

LOL we can all say we separate the person from the act but it's not so clear cut in reality.

Judging what someone believes to be good, is indirectly judging the person.

    I've read your posts.

Whilst, in this instance, the neighbour might be being unreasonable, it is also the case that, based on the lights shown, which do not flash, that a family have as much right to enjoy their lights as a neighbour has to not see them and whilst you advocate that the neighbour's wants should be considered, so too, should the family's.

As far as playing loud music is concerned, you cannot close your curtains on loud music, so the two are not comparable.

Serious question - so whose rights ARE more important here?

As an aside, I can't get my head round leaving curtains open once its dark, especially if the lights are on.

I can only guess these people don't have windows close to the street?

Wouldn't it be like living in a goldfish bowl?

Morally, they have equal rights, surely?

Ideally they would find a compromise but it would be interesting to see who would win a legal battle.
