On my Windows 2000 machines I have:
Router firewall
Windows updates turned onto fully automatic
AVG Free Edition (but Avast was actually rated better by Which?)
Prevx Intrusion Prevention
Spybot Search and Destroy
Adaware SE Personal (Which? recommend you use this in combination with Spybot)
Firefox with adblock extension, and Yahoo Anti-spy installed
IE with Yahoo Anti-Spy and pop-up blocker
Thunderbird, Yahoo mail for email (built in spam filters/image blocking)
I also use webmail from Yahoo for website submissions as they have built in spam filtering and antivirus. I only get spam on one Yahoo account.
Not had a single piece of spam on any email account other than work and one yahoo account.
To my knowledge the last time I had a virus infection on one of my machines was in 1994 from an infected floppy disk!
It is also possible to 'harden' your machine to attack. This is something that professional IT system administrators are paid to do. A tool like Belarc Advisor can rate your system and make recommendations.0 -
Have read this thread but for complete novices, could someone please list the TYPES of protection required. EG, Anti-Virus, Firewall etc.
I have difficulty in knowing exactly which program does what.
When listing what software, could poster's please also advise what operating system they are using.
I have a laptop which had a free trial of McAffee which expired so I have just uninstalled McAffee and installed AVAST! as it works well on my desktop (Win98SE). However, the laptop operates on XP and I do not know what other software I need to install to protect the laptop or what may cause conflict with any software already installed (I wouldn't begin to know what XP has in respect of protection).
I also have a wireless router (Belkin) but haven't a clue how to use the website for protection - it's all gobblydegook to me.There is always light within the dark0 -
with Avast you only have anti virus software so I would install a Firewall such as sygate
http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm
which supports networking and Internet connection sharing . there is also zonealarm
www.zonealarm.com but this does not support ICS
your Belkin Router may have an inbuilt firewall, post the model and then someone will tell youEx forum ambassador

There's a very good feature on routers - and why they're all essentially firewalls even if they don't advertise it - in this week's Security Now Podcast.
Just click here and scroll down to episode 3 to listen (Just an audio file - you don't have to have podcasting set up)
The second episode is also very interesting - What Microsoft is doing to tackle Malware and how it's removing bad sites from msn search but not sharing the knowledge with other search engines!0 -
