  • For the people out there with Wireless Routers, what Wireless security are you using (and if you just said, "what wireless security?" oh dear!).

My Router has WEP and WPA. I have set up access using WPA and I have also stopped it broadcasting its ID (i.e. if anyone sits outside the house and searches for wireless networks, they will not see my network broadcasting)

Many people can be surprised just how far theiw Wireless router broadcasts - it can be received in several houses round about you. No security means other people may access your network and Internet connection without you knowing.
  • WPA-PSK with randomly generated 32 character passkey changed monthly.

    SSID broadcast disabled.

    MAC filtering.

I pick up a few networks from my house, some only show about 20% signal, a new one has came on the block recently with no security, been like this for about 10 days now
  • If you're on broadband, your machine could be sending out spam emails without you knowing it.

How does this work, I seem to receive emails which appear to be from myself and they are of the spam category.

If you read the full headers of the email, you typically find they originated from a different ISP, so it isn't a problem with your own system sending them out.

Try following some of the tips from my homepage to lock your system down and you'll be a whole lot safer online if you haven't already got things in place.

As for the spam, do you pre-filter prior to downloading it ? - Mailwasher is very good at helping cut down on the mail you actually download, as it lets you preview it and delete it direct from the mail server, without ever risking a virus ridden email reaching your system. Depending on how much spam you get it might not be worth it, but I get in the region of 280-300 per day, and I manage to mark about 90% of that for deletion automatically...

I would concur with JasonW, ditch IE and use Mozill Firefox or Opera (you can now get free version without ads). Ther are other browsers, but these tow are probably the most popular. Both work better and quicker than Ie and have built in pop up stoppers. Also less susceptable to viruses.

    Security:

    built in router fire wall
    zone alarm
    AVG anti virus
    peer guardian
    spybot
    adware
    spyguard
    spyware blaster
    Waddle you do eh?

Sorry but just because your router does not sends its ID people can still see your network broadcasting.

  • I used to use AVG and Zone alarm, Unfortunately I've just upgraded to a 64bit pc (windows xp pro X64) which can't run the normal free versions.
Anybody know of decent free firewalls and antivirus which might be compatible?

    Thanks

I have Zone Alarm Firewall and until recently used Grisoft AVG free anti virus software.
I recently had to reinstall Windows 98 (after unplugging everything when decorating) and when I installed the AVG free software again Outlook Express stopped working, so I have uninstalled the AVG and no longer have any antivirus protection. Does anyone know how to fix this problem or would I be better buying some software? I am not technically minded and a bit thick when it comes to computers.
