Tess wrote:I have Zone Alarm Firewall and until recently used Grisoft AVG free anti virus software.
I recently had to reinstall Windows 98 (after unplugging everything when decorating) and when I installed the AVG free software again Outlook Express stopped working, so I have uninstalled the AVG and no longer have any antivirus protection. Does anyone know how to fix this problem or would I be better buying some software? I am not technically minded and a bit thick when it comes to computers.
You could try https://www.avast.com -free antivirus.
Many on here use AVG or Avast. If you have further problems just create a new thread on the techie board and no doubt you'll receive lots of goog help and advice0 -
Can I recommend Microsoft AntiSpyware. On both my and my gf's computer it has picked up nasties that Adaware and Spybot and the respective Virus Scanners missed. Well worth having a look if you don't have it.0

My list:
Agnitum Outpost Firewall
Kaspersky AntiVirus (Use AVG if you want a free av)
AdAware\MS Antispyware (occasionally) Spybot Search & Destroy\Hijack This
Browser: Sick of Firefox, back to Maxthon
oh and a router help even if you only have one pc and routrs only allow traffic requested.0 -
I am quite happy with the very basic setup I have. It is more than adequate.
AVG free for my Anti Virus software.
Built-in Windows firewall for my firewall.
Can't quite remember what I use for spyware, as I haven't used it in such a long time!
The reasons for using AVG are quite simple. It's free for a kick-off, and then also I like how it does a really good job. For example, if I download a virus, as soon as it's finished downloading, it'll tell me if there's a virus in there, and I can delete it. Nice and simple for all users (believe me, because I'm quite simple! :P)
Hope this is of some help to someone at least!0 -
You dont need to much security, as long as you have an antivirus, firewall and some kind of spyware remover.. The best security i have come across is NIS2005, Microsoft antispyware (only runs on 2000 / xp), and Lavasoft adaware. Too many can cause you problems. But the type antivirus and firewall is down to user preference.
All these are free apart from NIS.

I use:
Ad-Aware (Free Download version) Anti-Spyware
http://www.lavasoft.com
(Download at: http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5)
Spybot - Search & Destroy Anti-Spyware
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Firewall built into router Firewall
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition Anti-Virus

Internet Explorer Browser

Firefox Browser

I found that when I installed ZoneAlarm, it wasn't actually blocking anything because my Router's firewall was blocking everything before it could even enter my network. Therefore, I don't use ZA, just a firewall in my router. (Also, problems with ZA 6 made my mind up for me that I should remove it)
Do any of my links not work? If so, please PM me and I will update/remove them! Thanks. PM Me0 -

Until very recently, I've been content with:
But after reading through these:- The 46 Best-ever Freeware Utilities

- MSN Search Toolbar with Phishing Filter (and tabbed browsing, too!)
After using the MSN Search Toolbar for a short while, I discovered that it was making Internet Explorer a little unstable, so I uninstalled it. I wasn't using any of the other features anyway...0 -
I change my setup lots. Right now I have...
AVG - I think it has the lightest touch of the AVs but because I don't like to trust one anti-virus I regularly use online scanners
Spywareblaster
IESpyad (tutorial) - stopped me getting quite a bit of spyware when using IE
MS Antispyware
I also scan every now and then with:
though I don't use the real-time protection with the any of these
(and if you have Spybot you should definetly use its startup manager regulary to check what's been added.)
I usually leave my software Firewall off and rely on my Router's one but if I'm worried about something I switch it back on to see what's happening.
I also sometimes scan with RootkitRevealer to check nothing has been added
That might seem a lot but it's really only one scan with a differnt scaner every night.
Of course, none of these scans ever finds anything because I use Firefox and only get freeware after checking reviews at download.com and snapfiles.0
