This thread is for free online scanners, which run in your web browser - NOT installed software like Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, AVG and so on. The online scanners are useful because certain infections can prevent resident anti-virus software installing or running correctly.

If you think you might have a virus problem and you either have no anti-virus protection or your own anti-virus wont run, click on any of the links below for a free online scan (connection to internet required):

Note: Some of these scanners use ActiveX and need to be opened in Internet Explorer to run correctly.

hiya, how do you disable system restore????????

In XP : Right-click My Computer..scroll down to properties and click. This opens system properties and you'll see the System Restore tab - click that and the System Restore window opens then click System Restore settings and tick the box to switch off System Restore. Just remember to switch it back on after scanning.

PS: anyone thinking of using the free online Panda activescan - bit of a waste of time, it scans alright but wants you to upgrade/purchase if it's to remove any nasties! Use one of the others instead that will actually remove nasty stuff: trend Micro or Bitdefender.

    Hiya there.

On your good list of free virus scanners you missed out the best possible one.

It is called Anti-Vir (google it ;) ) - the default page is german but there is an english site somewhere. I've had it for about a year now.. its got rid of every virus and its absolutely brilliant. They've just commercialised as well but still have the free version with all definition files.

    Highly recommended.

    http://www.free-av.com is the link

another one who missed the point of the thread....the list is of free ONLINE scanners !!

there is already a list on free Anti Virus software in the Techie FAQ's at the top of the Techie section

frans post about 4 posts up covers the link to the FAQ article about anti-virus software ...

those who are not technically minded may get confused by you linking out to other software

    as the first post states

"If you think you might have a virus problem and you either have no anti-virus protection or your own anti-virus wont run, click on any of the links below for a free online scan (connection to internet required):"
