Presumably you occasionally run online scanners otherwise how do you know you haven't been infected? Some viruses don't present obvious symptoms."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I was thinking the same thing, if there isn't any AV software then how does the user know their machine is not infected. But, an occasional online scan, even for those with AV software installed is a good idea every now and again.
I run Windows XP Pro (SP3)
AVG (Free)
Zone Alarm (Free)
Adaware (Free)
Spyybot S&D (Free)0 -

i use prevx csi daily, it scans free but you pay to remove virus or google it and do it yourself.Bankrupt on the 19th feb 2007

I thought it only looked for mostly rootkits and spyware. I.e. complementary to using antivirus scanning/software but doesn't replace it/not comprehensive AV search."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Numbered points for clarity;simonsharks wrote: »
* 1. Windows firewall is good. You don't need a 3rd party firewall anymore, unless you want to control out bound traffic.
* 2. You mention Linux but not Mac, neither are affected by viruses and spyware, although no OS is 100% secure.
* 3. User behavior is the most important factor of all. I simply don't run any security on some of my PC's because I know what not to do.
1. In my experience Windows Firewall has quite a few flaws (aside from not monitoring outbound traffic) and there have been published POCs (proof of concept code) and techniques for quite awhile since Service Pack 2 came out that show some of the vulnerabilities.
I would strongly recommend a third party software or a seperate hardware firewall.
2. Incorrect - there are malicious threats on every platform (yes, I'm a geek) For example Rootkits have been around in Linux land for a very long time.
3. I really hope you don't connect to the internet without some form of a firewall. No amount of 'common sense or user intervention' will stop some threats when you are automatically receiving data packets from a public network like the internet.
Not a personel attack, just giving my experience and opinion- amassing0 -

Yep even die hard nonantivirus "activists" still all use really decent firewalls. I've seen firsthand that without a firewall you can get a virus/worm implanted on your computer in minutes without even visiting anything other than legitimate (ironically) security sites."She is quite the oddball. I'll reiterate from my post "not comprehensive AV search". As far as I know they don't recommend you use it as a replacement to AV only use it in addition to it.
E.g. "detection is highly additive to the mainstream antivirus""She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
