Hi Sixtyplus
I'm a Techie numpty, unlike most on this thread I think. Most of it is wayyyyy over my head! Today I got the same message as you- if you click on the button on the right of the pop-up, it goes onto the section which bills you. But click on the button that says something like "Click here to see all v8.0 products", and you can upgrade to the free v8.0. There is a list so you can compare what you get for free (not much) with what you get for £££ (loads). But I make no comment as to what the quality of any of it is!!

I use Linux so viruses are not an issue (there are no Linux viruses 'in the wild' and only a few 'cross platform' viruses that can cause niggles to mono or wine based applications - I use nether mono or wine so feel safe....)
The only real threat to Linux based OS's (and the *BSD family) are rootkits, and there is a rather good application called 'rkhunter' to protect-against/help-with that.
I use a router firewall to protect/hide my presence on the net, and use firewalls (a shorewall based one) on each of the Linux boxes/laptops to make 'driveby-wifi-hackings' more difficult.
The wireless network is encrypted with WPA/PSK encryption.
The other security device I use is common sense.
as a suggestion to folks running Windows who would like to try Linux, you can always use a virtual machine using VMware or Vbox or try a 'LiveCD' which runs the operating system from a CD without touching the hard drive.
have fun, and be safe.

It is obvious that AVG is the most popular Free Anti-Virus but it has some annoying features, such as announcing on every email that it has been scanned by AVG. I use Avast as a preference, but what is the general opinion as to which is best. I can honestly say I have never had a problem with a Virus since using it. I also use Vista Firewall, Spyware Blaster, AdAware 2007 and for clean-ups, C.Cleaner (used to be Crap Cleaner).
Vista also has a bit more protection than ME and XP."0844 COSTS YOU MORE"0 -
I thought in AVG you can turn off the email certification0

You can and I'm pretty sure most pop3 scanners put that certification in by default so hardly something specific to AVG."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I use AVG free edition, Adaware (free) and I also have Spybot search and destroy, but i never really run them. I dont have a firewall installed either, (except windows, which is disabled) but i am on a protected network.
In my opinion the SAFEST way to browse/stay protected, is to simply live by some rules.
Learn the difference between ad's and non ad's. Because of the way adverts work, they will appear relevent to whatever it is you are looking for, but just know the layout and format of the ads (like most google ads say that they are google ads on the bottom, or look like a square with plain background colour). Popups are always annoying. The best was to check if a link is spam or not is simply look at the address link at the bottom when you mouse over the link. It will say in the status bar the link location, if it is the same as the site you are currently on, then it will become (https://www.samesite.com/whatever/ect/ect), but if it is an advert or some other rubbish, it will say something different, (e.g. https://www.ad.spam.viruslol.com/ref=23123).
When downloading files, number one check is the filename. If it is something very general like "setup.exe" then its probably a virus. If you know what you are downloading is a video, but its appearing as a strange filetype (exe, FILE ) instead of MPG, AVI, MOV) then usually it will be a hidden virus. Sometimes these things are compressed (.ZIP, .RAR, .7z) and then if the filename looks ok, then you can check the SIZE of the file. Learn what size downloads are generally. If it is about 5kb or less, then it might be a virus.0 -

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to see if i could lend a hand in the quest to secure your system and data for FREE. I have been using a program called DriveSentry
www.drivesentry.com
Check it out. It has a free 30 day trial and it says on the Wilders Security forum that they will be releasing their FREE version hopefully next week...or atleast by the time your trial is over !
So i have downloaded it and it is real good offering instant protection and one of the biggest databases containing over 1 million virus/spyware/trojan signatures. check the website out, it really does what it says on the tin, which is rare, expecially for FREE antivirus/spyware products.
I have had some great tips by viewing this forum in the past so wanted to re-pay the favour.
enjoy,
OISEY x :money:
