There is a free version of 8.0, though I'm not sure which features are now disabled. I think they've realised that the free version was so popular that people weren't buying the full version, so they've made it dumber in an attempt to get people to upgrade.Jumbo

Is this the end of AVG free then?
They should say the current version x will no longer be supported and it is suggested you upgrade to the paid for version because it is upgraded seamlessly, has oh so many more features, blah, blah, blah, ....or if you are totally satisfied with the free version there is a new free version for download.Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

This question appears on boards all over the place everytime AVG updates its program to the next version. They deliberately word it in such a way to con people into the paid version, which is one reason I won't use them.
Rubbish, you only have to visit their website to download the latest FREE version!

They have stated that version 7.5 will be supported until the end of the year, so no need to panic! If you want to upgrade to AVG Internet Security, you can. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Not at all, the fact that the question appears is testiment to the fact that it is not clear! If they wanted to be clear they'd state at the end of the "no longer supported" that you can download a new free version from this link. Dunno why you're so touchy.Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to see if i could lend a hand in the quest to secure your system and data for FREE. I have been using a program called DriveSentry
www.drivesentry.com
Check it out. It has a free 30 day trial and it says on the Wilders Security forum that they will be releasing their FREE version hopefully next week...or atleast by the time your trial is over !
So i have downloaded it and it is real good offering instant protection and one of the biggest databases containing over 1 million virus/spyware/trojan signatures. check the website out, it really does what it says on the tin, which is rare, expecially for FREE antivirus/spyware products.
I have had some great tips by viewing this forum in the past so wanted to re-pay the favour.
enjoy,

I'm also getting this message as are some friends, it says that updates for the AVG free will not be available after 31st May and they suggest we upgrade to AVG8 which isn't free when i checked.
Is this the end of AVG free then?
If so anyone know of any other good free ones please?
well, I've got AVG 8.0 and I didn't pay for it0 -
My security is simple:
Ubuntu with UFW turned ON
Truecrypt for important documents
No need for anything else:D

Don't worry about it, people come on the forum saying AVG is stopping their free versions every single time they bring out a new version. Just down to the ambiguity that at every upgrade they take the opportunity to advertise their full paid for version. For some reason without checking people assume this to mean that there's no free version any more. I guarantee you we'll get people saying the same thing when AVG 8.5 or 9.0 comes out."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Well, I use Avira as well, sort of belt and braces job:j0
