I have Norton 2008 and am very happy with it.

Was £25 and I can put it on 3 computers so I split the cost with my sister. :)

Not very good at actually detecting viruses though unfortunately which in my mind kind of defeats the point of having anti virus software.

    It's good enough.

If you get a virus imo it usually means you have been careless when visiting websites and clicking unknown items.

This is the first time I have ever bought any anti virus of any kind.

I'm talking about its detection rates. They're really poor. In all the lab tests it usually actually comes out worse that the free antivirus software. You won't really find anyone who'll actually recommend Norton over another package. If you've not bought any other AV then you don't really have a basis for comparison. Norton and McAfee are the worst I've ever used and that's including the free AVs.

To be honest IMHO it's not good enough. By definition you won't know you have a virus because Norton won't find it.

No point. AVG is only recommended because it's free. The paid for version isn't good enough in comparison to other paid for security suites. If you want to pay for a suite then get either Kaspersky Security Suite or Eset Smart Security.

    hi there

point taken, but would you recommend one pays for AV, or uses the free stuff?

Down to personal choice really. I used free AV for at least a couple of years but I now use Eset Smart Security. I find it's worth it for the slicker interface/all in one solution, minimal impact on resources and minimal pestering. The higher detection rates give me more confidence in it (which I realise is almost a psychological aspect in real terms for most of the time) although I've seen first hand the devastation of having poor detectibility in AV such as in McAfee etc. A few people do seem to occasionally come on here with virus/trojan problems when they already use AVG (or Norton for that matter) but I don't really remember anyone finding their pc infected when they've used the likes of Eset or Kaspersky/Steganos.

I used AVG Free for all the many years I used a PC and never had a virus that was not found and quarantined (and that was only twice in 9 years). I have recently changed to a Mac and don't use anything.

    littleowl,

isn't the point that you could have a virus, and the program simply hasn't found it? I guess that goes with any av prog though. I think as i have never had any issues with avg, i will use the free version again. it's just i am buying a new laptop for first time in 5 years so want to protect it.

    cheers for all your input

I suppose that is possible but if I had had a virus it certainly didn't manifest itself or cause me any problems.
