You can get Eset Smart Security (from the makers of NOD32,) for really cheap if you group together and get a longer license for multiple people. The price difference is huge!
I find that Avast, Comodo, Ad-Aware, and Spyware Blaster to be good free alternatives to all the paid software.
On my Windows machine, I don't actually use any security programs. If you really know what you are doing, you do not need them. Of course you could just go and use Linux insteadQualified member of the Chartered Institute of Insurers.
I used to work for a software house dealing with insurance quotations, so I know quite a lot about a few insurers!0 -

Got quite a few machines running here, used to have 18, but can't afford the electric anymore <sniff>. Anyways, got Comodo free wirewall and AVG free AV running on all of them. I keep windows up to date too which helps.
I have 3 routers, the gateway which my web server connects to directly, then 2 wireless routers which the rest of the network is connected to. All 3 have NAT firewall enabled and dmz set to a non existant IP. The entire network is MAC filtered too.
I do from time to time run hijackthis, but never get anything.
A lot of security has to do with common sence, if you are going to download pr0n from unknown sources or file sharing, you're bound to get hit sooner or later. Avoiding those types of things or knowing what to look for can save a lot of hassle.
Waiting patiently for Comodo's stand alone AV, and I'll try that, until then though, I'm more than happy with my current setup. Never had an infestation. I have downloaded virii by accident, but AVG has always picked it up.0 -

For me that day is today, or at least a few months ago, all my machines run in virtual, wiped at reboot.Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

I use clamav for viruses. It's a free virus scanner that was biult for unix systems. Though has been ported to windows. It's a great virus scanner and it's free. It work's fine for me and since 80% or more of website servers are unix based and probablery 20 - 30% of them use this im more than happy with it. no adware in this i hate Malware.
avg is worth a look avg
clamav
Malware scanners etc
Adaware great free program does the biz on most junk i end up getting i tend to use three adware programs. i also use a few registry tweeks but they can be a bit advanced to some people.
adaware 2007 free
just incase adaware missus anything
spybot
firewall
in all honesty a firewall is upto you i do not really care about it. i use zonealarm the free edition just easy to deal with i hate nortons pretentousness to block everything it does not understand.
zonealarm
this is a good option if your pc gets totally messed install everything i need to run this today

I find Grisoft AVG free is the best for free self updating, run in the tray no problems virus protection.
As a firewall I recommend Zonelabs Zonealarm. There is a free version on the website, its great if you can be bothered to go thru the click interface everytime a new, or updated program trys to get to the net for the first time.
As a sweeper I swear by and recommend Advanced WindowsCare V.2. Pro. Its free (no suprise lol) and does everything from cookies to registery and also start up items. Also handles spyware and adware, and it does a update which is vital. The great thing is its small, fast and does the whole lot!
For spam, there is a pleathora of free applications that seem to offer the world but make little difference. I use Spampal. It can be a little of a pain to set up but the auto setup wizard with it does the job for Outlook and Outlook Express and 8/10 times gets the real email into the Inbox. As with all applications that crosscheck a lot of blacklist's there can always be a miss so your geniune stuff can end up in the spam folder, so its always worth checking for just incase. This program BTW has never yet put spam into my Inbox.

hi all
about to purchase a new laptop and am wondering what your thoughts are on the paid for AVG?
I run the free version atm but not too sure it is as comprehensive as the paid for (I know this could just be marketing tricks).
I understand hijacks and drive-by-downloads and all the rest are becoming very sophisticated, but as i'm not in the know, i'm not sure (I am looking at circa £50 for AVG 8.0 Internet Security and that's only for 1 year, or £60 for 2 years.).
BTW I have used the like of ad-aware, spybot, kaspersky (sp?) etc in the past and whilst i liked adaware, i didn't rate the others. I also want one package that doesn't slow the pc down. Obviously cost is an issue, hence the dilemma.
Thoughts are appreciated
thanks!
ps i have done a search and can't find a thread on paid for avg, so feel free to (politley) re-direct me if it's around
thanks0 -

No point. AVG is only recommended because it's free. The paid for version isn't good enough in comparison to other paid for security suites. If you want to pay for a suite then get either Kaspersky Security Suite or Eset Smart Security."She is quite the oddball.
