Doh, didn't notice the date. I was too overwelmed by the level of security to notice. But hey, I'm new to the form so I hope you make some allowancesI think my comments are still valid though. My security setup hasn't really changed much in the last 3-5 years personally. The important thing to remember is you are only assecure as your weakest link. Forget to update the firewall and your not nearly as secure as you think you are.
To be honest though I think Windows patches, Anti-virus, firewall and wireless security are enough for most people. Oh and to quote the orginal poster. Backup, backup, backup.0 -

Quite agree. I've got Eset Smart Security and a few free antispyware/malware apps and I think that's it."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

The Vista desktop PC is just behind a modem from TalkTalk - it's connected via the ethernet port, but I'm not sure if it has a hardware firewall. I didn't find anything in the documentation when I set it up, but I didn't read all of it!
How good is the Vista firewall about blocking unwanted incoming stuff?
I'm afraid any commentary on Vista would be second hand from me as I don't run it, I'm staying with XP, but secondhand info suggests Vista security is ok.
If you are going to add wireless I would take the opportunity to get a wireless modem router with an inbuilt hardware firewall, this will be adequate protection for most users. Likely if it just a modem that talk talk supplied there may be no firewall in it. Most modern modem routers have an inbuilt firewall these days, behind that even XP's firewall is adequate for most home users.Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

Afternoon all,
i've just realised that my MacAfee subs ran out yesterday (free wiith SKY for first year), but looking at these posts it may be a better idea to go and get the various other free software protections out there. I see that most people have complaints against Norton rather than MacAfee or are they pretty much the same?
is this a good way to go to find the suitbale software:

My experiences...
What i fun couple of days I've had.
I got rid of Norton 360 and opted for Kaspersky IS. Didn't like it one bit and found it too messy to configure.
So got rid of this and went for AVG AV, Comodor FW, Adware and CCleaner. This were going OK but then couldn't get printer to work. It came up with a "Not enough Memory " warning. This can't be right as i have 4 GIG of RAM.
Anyway tried messing about with Virtual memories, Page files, MSCONFIG etc but still got the memory error message.
I then tried to remove the above apps one by one and guess what - as soon as i disabled/removed Comodor FW - my printer started to work again.
So it was late last night and i've no protection on my PC, so what i did - downloaded the 15 day trial of Norton 2008 and installed it.
I now need to look for a decent firewall.
Anyone use BitDefender?

Not used Kaspersky so can't comment, used to use Comodo but I've heard it's becoming a hog now. I currently use Eset Smart Security, easiest and best antivirus and firewall I've ever used."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I was a Comodo fan but didn't get on with the latest incarnation (failed Comodos own leak test).
If using XP, I suggest looking at Online Armor , now being used by myself and a few others here.
It's very easy to configure and unobtrusive once it's learned about your computer.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
