Agree with some others that the internet is not as dangerous as many make out.

Oh it can be, you just need to know where to look. I browse warez sites and the occasional x rated site ;) I run Adaware & Spybot after every single internet session and they always come back with something. My Norton products usually show alerts 1-2 times a week, the last one on Friday, 'Bloodhound Morphine' That sounds ace doesn't it! Wonder what it would do if I let it in :rotfl:

When I'm using Windows, I have Free AVG, hardware firewall/router with UPnP turned off and just a few port forwarding rules, and Sygate personal firewall (software - to check outbound connections)
Run Adaware and Spybot every now and then.
I've had that setup for years now, and it's kept my computer safe.

Sygate was a really good free firewall, unfortunately they got bought by Symantec a few years back, who then discontinued Sygate's products. I still have the setup for their last version USB key.

Having said that, I'm typing this on the work laptop which has some sort of Norton Internet Security thing on it, which I don't like, but thankfully it's a professional edition so not quite as bad as their end-user products.
  • I use and like Kaspersky Anti Virus. It doesn't make my computer as sluggish as Norton/Symantec. It is very good on detection and updates.
  • Hi, i have read alot of this thread and taken the plunge and have uninstalled Norton, I now have on pc
    AVAST for antivirus
    Comodeo firewall
    SYYBOT S&D
Is there anything else that i should have up and running on Pc?

Will i be ok with what i have downloaded? Just feel a little bit insecure as with Norton it all seemed so easy and i never have had any viruses etc

Why browse Warez sites...when everything they have can be found 'crap free' elsewhere?

Wow this is a huge thread to read with so many recommendation's.

    I need some advise peeps.

I'm currently running Norton 360 on 3 PC's (mine is Vista, 10 yr old son is Vista, 7 yr old son is XP) and as you guessed it - it's slow as anything.

I'm looking at binning it but am afraid the 'freebies' won't be as efficient.

    Can anyone recommend

    1. Best AV
    2. Best Internet Security
    3. Best Firewall
    4. Best Net nanny

The good think about Norton was the easy to use and the one stop shop....

    Thanks
