  • Hi Mrs Chocoholic.
A lot of people will have you believe that you need to be protected up to your Back Teeth.

    Dont believe it!!!
I am a PC Engineer, and I can honestly say...I have more workload from Internet Problems caused By Norton, McAfee and Zonealarm...than are EVER caused by Virus's or Hackers!
(Spyware is more of a concern, but you can deal with that for free too!!!)

Here are a few links to must have's (and all free)

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/ (get the free one...but uninstall McAfee first!!)
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html (great for preventing as well as removing Spyware)

And for everyday home use...get a Router and just use Windows Firewall....And you'll be fine!!!

Thats all i use...and have NEVER had a problem!...DONT SPEND MONEY ON INTERNET SECURITY!!!

I disagree, I personally think you should definitely have a software firewall as well. I've seen first hand pcs getting infected simply from going online without a software firewall (even with a router firewall which unless you're very anal about configuring isn't much use for tailoring to individual applications and not preventing any outbound transmissions by default). Saw it happen literally within a couple of minutes of being connected to the internet once.

Well...I can only talk from experience...But if a Software firewall is something you 'feel' you need...again, there is Zonealarm which is free.
But I find it very 'Naggy' like many Software firewalls..... And I can say, hand on Heart...that I have never seen any advantage to having one...but hey...you pays ya money!;)

That's just it, you don't need to pay for the outgoing protection that a free software firewall gives you. No problems if you learn how to use them!

I wouldn't personally use zonealarm I found it to be too intrusive. Not to mention (unless it's changed) too bloated and installs 3rd party software without permission or choice. Eset's firewall is almost completely non-intrusive. And as I said I've personally seen the danger of not having one. I.e. the difference between a machine getting infected or not was purely whether it had a software firewall active or not. If you don't have one then by definition you don't know what's happening with the ports on your own pc. I've never personally seen anyone hit by a car but that doesn't mean I should be blase about crossing the road. ;)

I don't use Microsoft OSes at home so I've got less to worry about than most. Only my work laptop runs Vista 64bit. Everything else at home runs FreeBSD/Linux. I have a Cisco PIX 515E firewall which handles my intrusion detection, VPN access in and out, and all my outside world connectivity. I use SpamAssassin and ClamAV on my mailserver, and SquidGuard for my web filtering needs.

On a note about windows software, I always steer people away from Norton and ZoneAlarm software, its bloated, wastes resources, and is generally a pain if you ever want to take it off.

Been using Zone Alarm for around five years without any problems.

I have used various virus checkers over the years but AVG I have used for quite some time now.

For spyware I have used AVG Ant-Spyware which does the job but for the most part I use Lavasofts Ad-Aware.

    I have the following

    Sunbelt Kerio firewall
    AVG antivirus
    Lavasoft ad-aware
    Spybot
    SuperAntiSpyware
    Ccleaner

All for free. I update them regularly and run them all at least once a week. All my three lappies have this stuff on them and I've never had problems except once when I downloaded something that caused my lappy to freeze - but again, running the above softwares took care of that on the spot.
