Still on dial-up, running Norton AV, Sygate firewall, AdAware SE, Spyware Doctor & Spyware Blaster. Had problems with kerio-pf & Zone Alarm. Now Sygate seems to want to block programs that I have told it to allow !! Did we all realise what we were getting into !!

I suggest you all get Microsoft Antispyware beta

It just picked up 20 spyware items on my PC that Spybot, Spyware Blaster and Ad-Aware 6.0 Professional all failed to detect

    Edit:
    My System as follows:
    Hardware firewall (wireless router)
    Windows XP SP2
    Zone Alarm
    AVG Free
    Spybot S&D
    Spywareblaster (flash killer on)
    Ad-Aware
    Microsoft Antispyware beta

I need some kind of software to keep teenagers off dodgy websites, I use Internet Explorer which is very easy to configure, password and block but my son uses MSN Explorer and there doesn't appear to be any protection or blocks for MSN
A cynic is a man who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing.
  • I run with the following but S.W.M.B.O. reckons I'm paranoid.
    Wireless/modem/router
    Ad-aware
    Spybot S&D
    Spywareblaster
    Ccleaner
    Nortons firewall/antivirus
    Microsoft Spyware
    Firefox
    Unp&p
    HiJack this
    Tweak XP
    Paranoid but clean.
They come with something so rarely that I often wonder if they're working.
Down south where, unfortunately, the government does remember us.

Any more? It's interesting to see the variety and amount of security people use and how it works or not for you.

    Zone Alarm free *
    AntiVir by H+BEDV

    SpywareBlaster
    SpywareGuard
    AdAware
    Spybot S&D
    MS Anti-Spyware - just downloaded; 0 problems

I think Spybot & SpywareBlaster are the main ones; block ad/tracking cookies and bad sites. I used to have a cookie manager, but it would turn off the SB settings rather than add to them.

    * ZA5 only recently; I stuck with 4.5.594 for a long time as the original version 5 clashed with unrecognised AV products; I think I've got the AV monitoring off at the moment.

Did everybody take WindowsUpdate as understood? Some friends wouldn't use it; if it works why disturb it? Then they got MyDoom or Sasser or something. So persuading friends to improve their security should help.

Junk emails - some people talk of Mailwasher or similar programs. I don't bother with any of this and got 3 junk messages in the last 16 months. My username is just my initials which probably helps; not a name which some junk mailers use for dictionary type lists eg john.smith@... The main thing seems to be not to have your email address on webpages; disguise it so it doesn't look like an address to crawler 'bots. If you get a lot of html junk, it might be worth turning off the Preview Pane in your email program, as there may be embedded beacons that send back an ident that you have seen the message, hence validating your address.

I'd be interested to know how much security people have on their PC's to prevent spware, viruses etc. I've not had a single problem (spyware/virus/anything!) on my PC since having this package (all free). I run this on a Celeron 2.6 Mhz with only 128MB, so it takes a few minutes to boot up completely. But it's worth it.

Too many people start new threads when there is a thread already running, covering the same subject!
Microsoft's new Anti Spyware is only suitable for those running Windows XP or 2000. Those of us on Me, or 98 and steam 95 can not use this programme.
