I use Zone Alarm (free version) & an excellent version of Norman (not Norton) virurs scontrol that used to be free from Opistat but unfortunately no longer.
Opistat still do the free version, I had Norman through Opistat (you need to participate in surveys), but when I got a virus I had to reinstall it and I couldn't get it to reinstall properly. After spending a long time trying to work it out and with Opistat sending help by email (but it still not working) I gave up with it. At one stage I had Norman & AVG on the computer and Norman would alert me first about viruses.

IPCop 1.3 firewall for DMZ, Wireless, and Internet access. http://www.ipcop.org/
Free firewall all web based, even patches, have used this for years no problems. Replaced a £7k Checkpoint firewall with an old PC from a skip and a £3 network card and this free software!

OpenSSH for all inbound and outbound traffic. http://www.openssh.com/
I use this compiled for 2048 bit

Proxytunnel to browse the net from work without being logged or snooped (Uses SSH to encrypt 2048 bit)

SNORT for Free Intrusion detection, also part of IPCop. Works well even on gigabit LANs

SME Server (Free from Mitel Networks) for mail, file and print, web mail, firewall, Mac and PC. http://contribs.org/modules/phpwiki/index.php?Downloads A great file server with a journal file system (never lose data even if the power fails!) also uses QMAIL this MTA has never been hacked!

AVGFREE at home for AV on the kids PC

Doctor Spyware at home for AV on the kids PC (Commercial software not free)
Seth.
• Sygate Personal Firewall

AVGFree AV

AD-Aware SE

HijackThis

Still manage to pick up small amounts of trojans and spyware, but regular system scans sort that.
Mine looks a bit paltry compared to some on here.
I haven't been asked to tell you that I'm the Board Drunk for this board. As the night wears on, my posts will become worse, with simple spelling mistakes, inane ramblings, and a blatant disregard for the truth. I have no authority to do anything, so there's no point asking or telling me. If you see me past midnight, please tell me to get my coat and order me a taxi.

Free Ebay Simple Profit/Loss Spreadsheet. PM me for a download link.

Thankfully I've only ever had one virus and one piece of spyware on my PC since I bought one ten years ago.

I created a web page to help friends & family keep their computers secure. It contains links free software downloads, and a bit of an explanation of what the problems are and how the software helps. If you want to have a look, the address is http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/insanity/security.html (let me know what you think!)

(NB This web page contains no advertising and doesn't generate a profit anyone in any way, and I'm not affiliated with ANY of the companies/products that I mention.)

Anyway, here's the software I use in case you're interested:

ZoneAlarm Pro firewall (in addition to my hardware firewall)
AVG Antivirus (free version)
SpywareBlaster (prevents certain spyware from being installed)
A HOSTS file (to block certain spyware and advertising websites)

Use Mozilla (instead of Internet Explorer)
Use Calypso (instead of Outlook)
Use Trillian (instead of MSN/AOL/Yahoo/IRC/ICQ messenger programs)
Use RealAlternative/QuicktimeAlternative/MediaPlayer Classic (instead of Real Player/Quicktime/Windows Media Player)

Occasionally I scan for spyware with:
Spybot
Ad-Aware

I also reset my router every now and then to obtain a new IP address.

Just one thing: FreeBSD

Its what some people (including I) would argue as being the most powerful, stable and secure operating system in the world today. Its rock solid. Its more secure than Linux; Apple even use FreeBSD in Mac OS X.

FreeBSD powers some of the largest and busiest websites on the internet.

Not a virus or piece of spyware in sight... but if there ever were FreeBSD would just shrug them off.

And you can't complain about its price either. But don't let that fool you

D-Link router with SPI firewall
Norton Internet Security 2004
AVG Anti-virus (with on-access scanner disabled, as it would 'fight' with Norton otherwise!)
SpywareBlaster
Spybot Search-and-Destroy
Ad-Aware SE

I have never had a virus on my home machine!

I started a new thread regarding a virus-type pest called CWS. Apparently Spybot S & D and Adaware do not remove this. But there is a free download tool which deals with it called CW Shredder. The download I used is not the latest version apparently but there is now a link on the thread for the latest version. A useful addition to our spyware protection.
