thats not an answer society changes them. Who decided they were going to take a nice word like gay and hijack it to mean something else?

You really don't understand do you? Go and do some research and then come back to us when you know what you are talking about. At the moment you are coming across as very ignorant.

You would have to ask that question to your own social circle. I hear it all the time, probably more so than gay.

Why don't you hear the word heterosexual? I'm sure that 'straight' didn't originally mean that.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

In the context in which it was used, there is nothing to complain about.

And theres the point on all these words. Context is far more important than the word.

Significnat sections of the black community have reclaimed the N word, where it is not used as an offensive word.

Same with Gay, !!!!!! and lots of other words plenty of gay people use lots of words in a friendly context with each other. If someone were to shout out "you f###ing !!!!!!" in the street then yes thats offensive. If one of my straight friends used the word !!!!!! then chances are they would be using it as a simple substitute for gay or homosexual. And to be honest even suggesting that this would cause offense is just pathetic.

If a mugger says calls you mate or love as he steals your money is he being friendly or offensive? Words in isolation have no meaning, its only the context in which they are used that gives them the meaning.

Im a gay man but being gay is only part of who I am. I dont need to spend all my time in gay company, I have a mixed circle of friends. Some gay, some straight, some lesbian, some black, some white, some asian and some are very odd. Its all part of lifes rich variety.

OP I think it is very sad that you have felt like you have had to keep your sexuality away from your parents and some family and friends. You know your family best but may be surprised by their reaction. My DS1 came out to me when he was 14, I admit I did cry, not because it bothered me but because I was afraid he would be picked on and bullied through school and later at work. He had good mates at school whom he is still friends with and was fine through uni and now in the workplace.

Tell your parents, they probably know deep down anyway and if they get upset don't read it the wrong way!
