Good Luck with the jobhunt Scaredy - I am frustrated by the lack of response when I apply, I have applied for hundreds and so far only one has come back and said thanks but no thanks. I have no idea what I am doing wrong so have figured that is either my age, disability or the fact that I have been self employed that is putting people off. I do not have a reference from the time I worked at the Uni either as I figure it is so long since I have left plus I vowed never to ask them after the way they treated me as I was afraid as to what lies they would come up with.

Horace - no one will expect you to turn up with references. They'll ask whether they can contact previous employers for them, and TBH if the employment was a while ago, won't bother. They'll only expect an HR reference anyway (yes she worked here, from this date to that date) as no one really gives out anything more nowadays for fear of being sued. I have a couple of personal referees on my CV, linked to a couple of jobs I've had, but they have never been contacted. The only contact that has been made is AFTER I have accepted the offer and given my notice, the HR reference has been taken up.

You've had a few interviews - have you asked for feedback from those?

Today I have washed myself (after a lot of faffing about) and set off the DW. I have also had all my work calls for the next week rescheduled and my diary blocked indefinitely to avoid having to do more rescheduling. I've made a start on organising travel for Helsinki and Stockholm. OH will be with me the whole time in Helsinki, but has a day on the other side of Sweden in the middle of the week just to complicate things. We're not going to have much time for sightseeing sadly (there never is on work trips).
  • Evening all. Had one of those days at work where I would have been happier telecommuting from up a mountain somewhere. It totally SUCKED. I have done two presentations today, which I spent ages putting together and scripting and stuff, and frankly, I could have been talking to myself. Somedays are a waste of make up. Today was one of those days.

On the upside (I am determined to find the upside!!) I think I have decided (FINALLY) on a distinctive "style" for me. This is one of the things I keep coming back to, and never really resolving properly. Well, I think I am going to go for Smart Bohemian. Basically smart clothes, but with a hippy twist. Take today's outfit for example. I am wearing smart black trousers and a smart wrap dress on top of it, with a funky necklace. I got lots of compliments, and felt really good, so I think I am going to go with that!

Right, dinner is on, and hubby has just come home, so need to get off here and get the rest of dinner on. The menu this evening is Soy and Mustard Glazed Chicken Thighs, with wholewheat noodles and stir-fry veggies. There is loads of it, which is good, because I could eat a horse.

Well done on looking on the bright side Crickett :)

I love the sound of your new look and your supper. I'm thinking couscous for a changed from boiled rice, followed by jelly and ice-cream (again) and maybe an early night...

Totally agree, with the exception of public sector roles.

Horace, it is posts like yours that make me find the time to send the dear john emails. What horrifies me is the number who email back to say I am the only one who has bothered.

Tonight we had pasta bake, I can't abide pasta, and DH hates 'slops' but other than that it was quite nice. The bara brith on the other hand was superb very thinly sliced with too much HM butter.

Hex - where I was last we had a recruitment management system that sent standard rejection letters at various stages of the process and all we had to do (recruiting managers, not HR) was press a button. Surely other people do too... (it was a SuccessFactors system BTW). At least people got the basic reasons for rejection (better qualified/more experienced candidates) etc and had a contact for feedback if they wanted it.

I'm glad your cold has gone Dora. I'm actually starting to feel better :) I assume the antibiotics are working as my temperature is down which makes a HUGE difference. I'm still waking up in a puddle at night, but not having the freaky half-waking dreams or feeling totally wrung out. I managed a shower on my own this morning, and have added rice, soup and couscous to the menu in the last couple of days. My GP said something about the severity of coughing being an indication of the level of bacteria (I told her about the coughing fits and how I was choking and felt like I was about to bring up my internal organs), so although it is less frequent, there are clearly some bugs still around as I'm still coughing a lot. Apparently once the coughing is over, then my voice can start to recover. Although I've been signed off, i've done some negotiating with my boss, and hopefully won't have to take sick leave if I get enough done. So today has been doing a lot of admin - chasing up travel arrangements, doing filling etc.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll feel well enough to get some writing done, and I can a. clear the overdue stuff and b. get ahead with next month's stuff as I have an overnight trip and a week long trip in there, so that takes out a major chunk of time.

I did also sort the washing, so it would be good to get some done, as well as emptying the dishwasher. And thanks to MG and PatMac, I also want to try to make some onion soup :) I should have visitors at some point, which means I can get them to restock painkillers and water, which I'm running short of.

Off to try to get some sleep, give up, surf MSE till the early hours and then flake out with exhaustion and wake up in a clammy puddle at about 4am...

Morning all! I'm feeling quite perky today - at last! Last month I had to find a lot of 'extra' money to pay the bills. With the help of ebay funds and some unexpected mini rebates here and there I can just about cover everything this month. I have another rebate due which will help me reduce one particular debt with the knock on being future monthly payments will reduce. I am working closely with the snowball calculator to make sure my money is working hard and being as effective as possible.

Greenbee - I hope you managed to change your night time pattern a little with an increase in time spent sleeping!!

Right, work today so no more time to sit doing all things money. Have a good day everyone.
One step at a time ;)
