You can get food at Trago Mills now?! I remember when it first opened in the sixties in a collection of sheds (Nissen huts?). Mike Robertson’s weekly ads in the local paper were a hoot – though he was somewhat to the right of Attila the Hun! (I gather that his son has followed in his footsteps.) He had on-going battles with “Authority” which he used to chronicle in his ads. I nearly applied for a summer job there once, until I found out that he’d decided that everyone working there was self-employed so he didn’t have to bother with annoying things like Tax, NI and the (then new, now long-forgotten) Selective Employment Tax. One of his better “wheezes” was the Shopper’s Club, which got around the Sunday Trading rules! Stuff was dirt cheap, though, and my mother & I spent many happy hours there. I haven’t been back for years but have just Googled & can’t get over the changes!

Claire, I see they’re planning a branch in Merthyr!

TMIF/Chev, don’t tell me there’s a Devon Matrix M*fia to rival the Fife one!

I love the idea of a Matrix M*fia - well if this family can't take of it's own over the next few years no-one can.

One last day being spent on Mums kitchen today - flooring arrived yesterday - but here is my good news.

They have asked the carpenter who set in the worktops to help me finish DS2's room for Christmas and he s hopefully starting on Monday night. Dad has finally realised I think that expecting help to do up their house but not reciprocating isn't fair. Thing is he still wants to play his golf so has realised there isn't enough time, so has done the decent thing and put his hand in his pocket.

I wouldn't care - but a couple of days would see it done and dusted ............... but a goal is a goal however it manifests and I will say thank-you. So I betcha no-one else is getting 10 hours of a carpenter for Christmas.

15 minute challenge for the day - create your menu for the "big meal" and pin it up. If you are mega organised you can even check and see what you have in stock and what you may still need to pick up.

Don't forget candles and napkins - and the extra bottle of washing up liquid too.

    Happy weekend peeps

  • MG, I'm glad you're getting some reciprocal help, after all you've spent hours and hours of time and a lot of energy helping out your parents - so it's good they are completing the circle. You've done a lot of the prep so an experienced chippy should breeze through what's left to do. And it leaves you free to apply yourself to other things without getting exhausted.

I've been up through the night and having phoned NHS24, have an appt this morning with the out-of-hours service at the nearest hospital - nothing too serious, just need antibiotics for a kidney infection - funnily enough the last time it happened, 4 years ago, was at the weekend and I had to follow the same route. All very efficient. This time they need to be careful which abx they put me on, but I have the info printed off to take.

I'll be taking it easy today, curled up with a good book and drinking loads of water!

    Have a good day everyone.

I think you may be my twin or at least in my head MG. I did this yesterday evening and booked a supermarket delivery for 22 December which I can alter right up to 21st, with a free delivery voucher:j. I ordered my meat from the Farmers Market - it is on 18th December but if you pre order it is all packed up for you to collect on the day, which saves me time and also saves the butcher hassle as he calls the Christmas Market mad Sunday! I also ordered my Christmas veg box delivery and I feel very organised.

I have not left it to Christmas Eve. I once, in the early days of supermarket deliveries booked a Christmas Eve afternoon delivery slot, then spent all my time panicking, imagining Penelope Keith in the Good Life when she had to cancel Chritmas because her "Christmas in a van" was not delivered. I did love watching the Good Life, although I look more like Tom than Barbara lol:rotfl:
  • Just seen your post GQ, sounds nasty. Look after yourself this weekend and take it easy.

Hope you feel better soon Groatie

MG - I hope you've been watching the carpenter carefully and picking up lots of tips :) and we're still waiting for progress reports and updates on MFi3 :D
  • So I betcha no-one else is getting 10 hours of a carpenter for Christmas. MG

Not this year, but I did once have 260 feet of dado rail, and the man to apply it to the walls (nice modern house with a lot of twiddly corners and odd angles)...as my Christmas present.

Personally I love useful clutter free presents, speaking of which, I must go do some more shopping later...

Although no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.... life is a WIP.

  • :( To kidney infection Groatie. I hope you are feeling better soon

:j To carpenters for Christmas. (In a way that would be my kind of Christmas Pressie, cos it helps you achieve a goal)

Well your Christmas mealtime challenge got me thinking about what I have already bought for the big weekend and what else I still need to get. My main worry is am I going to get a 20lb turkey in my oven (dh ordered a fresh one from work.... so which bits can you cut off :rotfl:)

Had a big birthday yesterday (dh pointed out that collectively we are 100:eek:). Had a lovely family meal followed by a mooch around the Christmas Market really festive with the cathedral and castle lit up, I tested all the goodies and had a mulled wine so all was good

Today I am going to make a meal plan for the big weekend. (note the "big weekend" bit as I have family drizzling in and out for a few days)
Also a meal plan to last up to the Friday before.
I have assessed all wrapping paper cards etc and I have plenty so boxes can now go back into loft room.

A bit of a lazy weekend for me dd and bf are here for weekend, so can't really do any major tasks. Going back to Christmas Market with a friend to sample more goodies. Some reading for work, and put the shopping away from last weekend which is still in the shopping bags in the garage (it is all larder stuff, so none of it will be ripe and singing and dancing) Tomorrow will be December planning day for me.

    No plan. No action.
My finances are work in progress.
    Normal veiwing will resume shortly
  • Hi all
