We always use those silicon baking sheets on our George Forman grill - just place top & bottom (or use a large one folded over) - keeps the grill nice and clean :D.

We had our first Georgy Foreman for about 5 years and then it stopped being so non stick so we decided to buy a new one. I just waited for a suitable one to be in the sales and bought one. Ended up buying it from Amazon with 65% off. Personally I think 5 yrs is good value for something we used almost every day of the week.

Ours didn't have removeable plates btw but the outside stayed in almost pristine condition, it was just the interior that lost its non-stick.

Incidently we passed on our old one to a neighbour and she is still using it - she just oils the plates as if it was a grill pan.

So I say save up and wait for the sales and spoil yourself again if you can.

  • Thanks all for replies. Looks like it is a new one then. Shame as there is nothing wrong with it really, but I guess that's the way society makes things nowadays. Ah well, at least my wife will be happy! ;-) :-)
  • I accidentaly left my turned on for about an hour and a half after cooking a chicken breast (turned the toaster off instead ) and can't get them properly clean now. Have soaked them in really hot water and even tried soaking them in Cillit Bang.

I have an oven cleaner, but worried it will damage them? :undecided
  • Don't scrub with anything too harsh as you'll strip the non stick off them.

Sounds daft but when ours were still warm we'd scrub them, found it much easier to clean them when the stuff on it was warm. You could try wetting the stuff that won't come off, warming it up and seeing if it will reduce it's contact to the plates?
I wouldn't use oven cleaner, too harsh!

I used to do mine when it was warm too, made it so much easier.

  • If you have soaked them, I take it they are the removable plates? If so I wonder if a steam cleaner would loosen the burnt on deposits, it certainly worked well on my dirty oven. As a last resort you could try bio washing powder or Fairy power spray but I wouldn`t like to say whether they would damage the surface of the plates.

After 1 1/2 hours left on you sadly may have to accept you have murdered your George :(

How about applying a thick paste of bicarbonate of soda mixed with water? Leave it for at least 3 hours. Definitely won't do any harm and might just do the trick.

  • I let mine heat up and then quickly swish over with a soapy wet sponge, then wiping off with tissue paper. Have got carbonised barbeque chicken left by OH for 2 months without telling me (just hid it in the cupboard) in 4 minutes.

  • I put bicarb of soad on mine then poured over white vinegar, left for a few mins and the stuck on stuff came straight off
