Cleaning a George Foreman

  • Little trick we learnt was warm it up and then wipe it initially with a piece of stale bread, this soaks up all the grime a treat.

Then finish off with a wet cloth.

Mine has had a lot of use and the non-stick surface is coming away quite badly now, which makes it much harder to clean. I used to reheat it and use damp kitchen roll to wipe over it, but now I have to put neat washing up liquid on the warm grill plates, leave it to cool then chisel it with the plastic scraper to remove all of the grot.

I think the thing that started destroying it was cooking salmon fillets. You can't seem to remove the smell either, so the next time you use it the house stinks of old fish!

Mine always cleans easily - don't know what I do differently?

I just wipe it with a bit of kitchen towel or a cloth, usually a little while after I switch it off.

TBH I'm not that sure I'm overly impressed with it. Just more clutter in the kitchen that may not get used all that often.

  • Hi! Not sure if this is the most appropriate board, but here goes!

My wife and I three or four years ago, bought a George Foreman grill with the removable plates and it is a godsend. It has cut down on our use of the expensive main grill for simple meals, etc.

We got the removable plate version as we are perhaps a little too fastidious in our cleanliness regime (:D) and it seemed an easier way to go about it. Now three/four years on and the grill looks pretty horrible and we just cannot find a way to clean it. Despite following the manufacturers recommendations, the plates are losing their non-stickiness and are becoming harder to keep clean. The main body is colouring to the rear and the insides of which are starting to brown in the most disgusting way, but are virtually impossible to clean. They really need submersing and scrubbing but you cannot do that obviously as its electric!

Now perhaps three or four years of use almost three times a week or so is the life-span of one of these things and perhaps I am being unreasonably tight, but I am loathe to fork out another £70 for a new one, but then don't want the one I have to be in the state its in.

So, am I being unreasonable? Is there a way to safely deep clean this product? Or is three/four years of use about the lifespan and I should shut up, put up and buy another?

  • hello spursdave,I must admit ive never had anywhere near that length of time from a George grill,18months on average, altho the last one maybe was nearer 2yrs,but the digital display "went",and i think part of the element too as there was uneven cooking...I decided not to replace it,and instead bought a halogen oven(£47,from ideal world)and i much prefer it,food grills so much quicker and all the fat still drains off,its more versatile than that too because it is also an oven, but i use it mainly for grilling,(and toasted cheese)as i also recently bought a remoska.

i would say depends on how vigorously you cleaned it over the years! did you just use a dribble of water while it was hot and wipe with soft sponge? or did you use the green back of sponge? not having a go at you - dont think that! ive had mine - not moveable plates - fixed ones for year and half and its in pristine condition. and yes ive used it a lot! if its discoloured by heating element - I also may suspect it is overheating!
have to say - if you had it that long and used it that much - its darn good value and i look forward to next couple of years with mine!!!

It sounds like you need a new one but wait untill you see one on offer or a sale.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?

I had a cheapo electric grill that lasted two years before the non-stick came off. I now have a Cuisinart with removable plates (GR3U less than £60), which has a five year guarantee. You might try contacting the manufacturer to see if they can offer any advice of how best to clean your George Foreman, and if you can buy replacement plates?
