Sodium Lauryl Sulphate - usually found in wash products like cleansers and shampoos. Can be very harsh for people with sensitive skin.
SLS and its sister Sodium Laureth Sulphate are the ingredients that make stuff foam. Its in nearly everything with any kind of foam, including toothpaste where its a possible cause behind recurring mouth ulcers with no other real reason behind them. Its even been found in some eczema creams that don't even need to foam.
Its drying on your skin and can make sensitive skin and skin conditions worse but its cheap and advertising has told us if if it doesn't give us a big white foam we aren't clean so even though there are brilliant alternatives, its still widely used. I get caught out every now and again by trusting a companies "natural" claims then getting it home and realising what its got in it. Lush and Keihls were my last slip ups.
Its also used in experiments as a skin irritant control test. If they want to know how someones skin will react to a substance, they paint on some SLS, get a "control" irritation and see if what they are testing is better or worse.
I did my dissertation a few years ago on the ingredients in cosmetics and if the green brigade had any real scientific reasons behind all the stuff they claim will make people ill and SLS/SLES, perfume (unless i trust the company to use natural scents) and petrolatum are the only ones that I still actively avoid. I can tell the difference in my skin and hair if I use them.0 -
Hi all,
Well I am here to plonk my butt on the naughty step probably for the forseeable future!

OUT: The trial face wash had to be sent back, so off that went today.
INs:
Lush scentenary soap (smelled this, and it just had to be bought! mmmmmm)
Bodylishuss! Cranberry body butter and scrub 50ml each.

UU's to report Priorie gentle face wash WNBA my skin has been really clear while using this but No7 age defence balm is virtually the same and a lot cheaper!
Dove plum shower gel WBA love a bit of dove but it seemed to UU v quickly!
Aveda shampure shampoo WBA this didn't upset my scalp at all, no itching, no flaking. The only thing that puts me off is the price! Onto a Naked shampoo to try.0 -
Evening all
I have had 3 UU so far in December -
pack of Costco cotton wool pads, WNBA, these are good pads but I have another 5 packs of them!! I started using washable pads made of towelling for my cleanser and toner because I went through so many packs of cotton wool .... so now it takes me about a year to go through a pack when I only use them for nail varnish remover!
2 x sachets of DHC moisturiser, WNBA, I hope I don't have any more of these lurking, every one I have opened seems to have split. I used one of these on each of my arms because I wasn't putting them anywhere near my face.
I have looked through my stash list document on the computer and counted up 94 UU for the year so far!! I am determined to make it to 100 so I will have to root out some perfume samples and sachets to finish up by the end of the month :TNo more buying unnecessary toiletries 2018
35 UU / 13 unnecessary ins0 -
UU to report - from a little while ago, actually. Aldi Lacura Daily Moisturiser with Self Tanner. WIBA? Yes, I love all the Lacura range, nothing has let me down yet. This particular moisturiser gave a really natural glow to the skin, and the moisturiser worked well too. It's a special though, and not part of the usual product range. The moisturiser I'm using now is a trial and is gorgeous. It's given me a really good skin tone.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage." Don't keep things 'for best' - that day never comes. Use them and enjoy them now.0
