Do that. You have a right to see your data

I would LOVE TO ASK MARTIN directly for his advice on this shocker...I have just telephoned my bank (First Trust Bank, Belfast) to request copies of my old statements (from June 2002-Feb 2003 only, as I have all remaining Statements from Feb'03 to present date).
I was told this wouldn't be a problem, though there is a charge for provision of old statements which have been previously been sent to customers. I agreed I could provide the £10.00 fee for this service, though I was then corrected by the banking advisor, that I will be charged £10.00 PER SHEET...not £10.00 in total for the documents.
I am so gobsmacked that I'm now on the Forum to ask whether anyone else has experienced this same shocker...??
Looking forward to views/experiences/advice...
Thanks

All banks can and do charge per statement for copies of them. You need to send the first template letter in Martin's article along with a cheque for £10 to request a list of your charges.

Yes as in Martins template you can ask for all information they hold on you including the charges for a one off £10 under the terms of the data protection act. However they do not have to provide this as statements (although most do) they can provide a list of charges if that is all you ask for or printouts of info on their computer system.
good luck

hi
i would ask for all data held as sometimes they dont give all the charges, ok if they do give the statements but if not its just what they decide to send you not the same as all the penalty charges.

Reading through the posts and the varying charges that each bank/credit card companies have for copy statements, is it not about time that something is done about this, as they seem to be excessive?? To request a copy statement and to be charged £3 or whatever for each one, seems excessive to me - RBS have statements online dating back 6 years (they have recently started this) and I wonder how many other banks/credit card companies have this facility, but if you have genuinely not received a statement, e.g as it has been lost in the post or whatever and you do not bank online, then to have to pay for a copy at these high charges is just another easy money making scheme for them. Come on Martin, see what you can do!!
Just out of interest, I wonder how much each copy statement that is requested would cost in real terms?0 -

Do you know how time consuming it is to sit in front of a microfiche and find the reference numbers for individual statements?
When i worked at a bank many years ago it was the job you hated to do the most. You could spend hours looking up the information. £3 is dirt cheap in my opinion if you have to go back onto microfiche records.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
