The Sewing Annexe

Options
I've noticed there are a few of us who sew on the Old Style board and thought it would be good to have a thread where we could post pictures of our makes, help each other with questions, post links to places we have found helpful and just generally support each other.

Now there is a Sewing Room on the Yuletide board but I thought it might be nice for us to have an Annexe here as well.

I haven't touched a sewing machine in 20 years and DH bought me the Aldi one for our anniversary ( at my request) in September. I have been ill since and took it out for the first time last week to sew some patches on a tshirt for DS2 as he is going to be a cow in the nativity.

So people please introduce yourselves and let's get chatting.

I learnt to sew because I always have fantastic ideas about what clothes I want to wear but can never find any!! :)

  • Ooooh - lovely idea for a thread! Flowertotmum, I bet my Jones is older than yours  It's a 1909 Jones Medium treadle which only goes forwards, cost me £2.50 on Ebay, and I wouldn't swap it for a £5,000 computerised machine  for all the tea in China. There's nothing to go wrong with it, and it'll stitch just about anything :D as it's spent most of its life so far sewing sacks in a barn. The only fuel cost apart from a little lubricating oil is lots of cups of tea for me.

I do a little light quilting (nothing complicated or highly technical, and I don't buy fabric to do it with, but chop up 50p bargain bin cotton shirts etc. from charity shops) make & mend stuff, and quite often manage to sell the things I've made, so I reckon that £2.50 was the best bargain ever.

Aiming to make some window quilts as soon as time allows; we have 3 windows which really need more coverage than they currently have, and a few more that would be all the better for it. I'm also making little coffee-pot cosies to sell; I buy cafetieres whenever I see them reasonably-priced in charity shops or at boot sales, then make little "strippy" quilts to "dress" them in (which makes them much more practical & economical to use, too) and sell them on for a fair bit more. So sewing's a very worthwhile skill to get the hang of.

  • Hi, I just learnt to sew this summer. I've done a lot of cross stitch in the past, but didn't have a sewing machine. Then my DD1 started at an all girls secondary school, where they still do textiles and she loves it, so for her birthday her GM and GGM clubbed together and bought her a (2nd hand) Husqvarna Lily 550. It's the same model as she uses at school.

I decided that as it's sat there all day while she is at school, I would have a go on it. I need a lot of help from my hubby to cut fabric and pin things, as I can't bend over the table, but I can sit and sew quite happily.

As I had no clue what I was doing, I went and bought "Sew" magazine and just had a go at the free pattern that came with it. img-thing?.out=jpg&size=l&tid=30764764
That one. I made it out of an old sheet, then out of some proper stretch jersey and I'm really happy with how it turned out. I was able to adjust it to compensate for my deformities and it looks better on me than a lot of store bought dresses. I'll get hubby to take some photos of me wearing it soon.

I'm really into it now, I'm sewing these bags at the moment to fill with other HM stuff for Christmas prezzies.

I'd love to join in. Managed to unearth my sewing machine(Toyota Quiltmaster) from the cupboard in August. I made 2 little bags to hold drawing books and crayons to keep 2 little girls occupied at my niece's wedding. I'm now making a patchwork quilt for my 20 year old DD. Have done hand patchwork before but a close friend is teaching me and 4 other friends to patch and quilt by machine. have made my first 3 blocks this afternoon. now feeling quite proud only 46 to go!!!!!!!!:j

Hi all, I would love to join in please. I am getting a sewing machine (Tesco basic, bought with clubcard vouchers, had great reviews) for Christmas, actually picked it up today. DH let me take the instruction book out before it was put away so I can study it and work out what to do as I have not used one since year 9 in secondary school (26 now). After looking at the (very good and well written) instructions I am terrified I won't know where to start but determined to give it a go. First mission is shortening my Mum's curtains by a few feet, which should be fairly simple. Then perhaps shopping bags or something from the leftover material. I think making clothes is a long way off for me but I shall certainly enjoy reading about everyone's projects and hopefully seeing a lot of inspiring pictures too :)

  • Hi, I'm a lapsed 'sewer' but have a basket full of projects to have a go at - two skirt lengths and some pieces for cushions for starters. Maybe you'll all be able to inspire me to get cracking. Pleeeease do send some pictures.

ragz just a little tip for shortening curtains, please forgive me if you already know this. The easy way is to cut off the surplus from the top, unpick the heading tape and re-sew it to the shortened curtain.
