I have seen a machine on John Lewis for around £70 so I guess for now that is my goal. After Christmas I am going to set up a savings pot in the hope of being able to get a basic model.

Do you shop at T*sco and can you squirrel away any vouchers?

I hit lucky at a CS again, got a 54"x90" heavy cream cotton ring-top curtain, plus a big piece of pale blue heavy cotton sateen (think that's what it's called), total £5 . Lovely for more bags and linings:) at least.

Really must sort out taking pictures and getting them onto here.

I have, I ask about once a month - I worry I'm breaking the rules. I can hand sew but extremely poorly. I hand sewed a draught excluder on Sunday and it's pretty poor.

I borrowed my mother in laws machine (that I broke so don't ever want to borrow again as it's an awful feeling) to knock up curtains (out of a matching duvet) and washing bag for my child's bedroom. I also sewed a cheap ikea fleecey blanket into a foot muff for the pushchair.

The world is your oyster with a sewing machine. It feels that way anyway.

Quick reply, baby crying. Have you seen these? Basic but cheap.

I am not sure that would be up to some of the heavier jobs unfortunatly.

Why don't you ask for money for Christmas and get a machine off Ebay or get your OH to say to people that he would like to get you a machine and would they like to put something towards it for Christmas. Then all he has to do is look up machines that can be picked up in your area.

I have had a delivery of felt today, I shall be spending tomorrow making up 24 felt bags with santa, rudolph and a snowman on. These will be strung from cord or ribbon and become the kids advent calender :T This year I am putting sweets in, as I am so late starting this project :o but next year I will collect little things to go in them during the year.

  • Hi fellow stitchers. Have made 5 more blocks for my DD's quilt today. Only 40 or so to go. Getting better at getting my seams straight so am very happy. Shame I have to go to work rather stay home and sew.

    Hi

I'm going to get my machine out again, spruce her up and replace missing feet etc. I homeschool, and I want to do more practical stuff with my daughter. I know she will enjoy it :-) Also one of my older daughter's and I are going to learn patchwork. I have done it before, but not for years.
Great thread, I'm enjoying it :-)

I made a cushion cover yesterday:) Never done that before, and it really was easy.
However, some of you may remember I managed to put the handles on one of the shopping bags on inside out? Well this time, despite checking and re-checking what I was doing, I got the front of the cover inside out:o
Didn't panic though, just cut it all round as close to the seam as I could, and re-stitched, it was fine if a bit tighter fit than intended!
It is pretty though, the front is from a remnant of expensive curtain material from a posh shop up the road, and the (envelope) back another remnant. This afternoon I shall have another go...

I have been doing an evening class in dress making and found this has really boosted my confidence.
I have made some pyjamas for DH and DS, a shirt dress for myself and a couple of tops. I am aso more confident with my craft sewing, and have been making a few decorations for the tree.
Recommend it if you can find one locally. :)

How lovely Gracie is your OH going to let you use it straightaway or do you have to wait until Xmas.My friend has a singer and it's so quiet. Enjoy using up that fabric stash.

Miffy, that quilt will be finished before you know it :D

Salome, what a lovely thing to do with your daughters and what a brilliant skill to equip them with. Oh! and wow! for home schooling, I don't think I wold have the patience.

:T Diflower, well done for not panicing and just carrying on and sorting it :j

tjak, wish our college did things like that. Our local colleges have all joined together under one banner and they all tend to specialize in one area and the one that does dressmaking etc. is 25 miles away and I don't drive and the buses are not reliable and they are going to cancel the evening courses after this year apparently. Our local sewing shop does lessons but they are £40 odd for a couple of hours and I just haven't got the money. Glad you have been able to do that though and it has given you confidence.

Gracie, :T for your DH  What a lovely surprise.

Right today I sat down and sewed 24 felt bags and then using more felt turned them into Santa, Rudolph and Snowman faces. They each have a little flap closure with some velcro on. I then sat and divided packets of sweets into 3 and put them into cellophane bags. Then put them into the felt bags. Only problem is I forgot to get any ribbon to hang them on so I had to tape them to the bookshelves until I have. Not very attractive but it does the job. It took me all day to do and I am blimmin' knackered.

I also recieved my material in the post today and am really pleased with it. I am not sure when I will have time to do the trees as I have to get some housework done tomorrow and I am out at a Christmas dinner in the evening. The weekend is so busy, I don't know whether I am coming or going and Monday I have appointments coming out of my ears. So I reckon it will be Tuesday at the earliest. I am champing at the bit to get going and I hate having to wait.
