Shroud and Swindon - sent Martins standard letter they replied saying the believed that they were entitled to raise their fees and would not be paying up - anyone had better luck with them - or advice on how o proceed?
  • Hi, we often change our mortgage and after a very few brief phone calls had so far £160 back from Bradford and Bingley and £100 from Halifax - it really was very easy and simple. Did not argue just asked for a few details and the cheques have arrived and been cashed!!!!
    Thank you.

As I believe I've posted previously, the FSA's ruling does not exclude this approach per se. If the lender can demonstrate that its costs have increased, and that the terms of their contracts allowed them to increase the fee in line with costs, then they can charge more than the fee quoted at the outset.

Few lenders are taking this approach, but they have generally increased their fees by more than the increase in costs and hence they can't argue this point.

I sent my standard letter to Cheltenham and Gloucs on the 7th March but have heard nothing yet. Should I write again? The original letter stated I wanted a response in 14 days but have yet to hear anything. Anyone else had any dealings with C&G?
  • I figured if I could find all the details in 5 mins it would be worth the price of a stamp to fill in the standard letter. I found the info really quickly, they said the would charge £195 five years ago and ended up charging me £295 a few months back.

I sent it off to Alliance and Leicester and got a standard reply back saying they would look into it! Then, this morning, out of the blue a cheque arrives for £220 :D

Nice work and definitely worth the price of a stamp :-)
  • I would like to thank Martin; I used the template letter to send to Alliance and Leicester and guessed they owed me £150.00. A couple of weeks later I received a letter with a cheque for £220.00. Is that good or what? Thank you and I am in the process of appealing my council tax.:money:
  • I filled in my letter a couple of weeks ago. I did not remember the original figure for the release fee but I knew it was not the 350 pounds they charged me when I changed mortgage 18 months ago.

Today I got a letter with a nice fat cheque for 285 pounds!!!

Cheers Martin, one for the consumer.:money:

(PS also got 3,500 back a couple of months ago on an endowment policy mis-selling through one of Martins previous campaigns, so double joy) :j

Can anyone confirm when Abbey upped their MEAFs from £65 to £225? Was their only one jump or was it in increments?
    Thanks.

I sent a letter to Alliance and Leicester regarding the £295 charge I had to pay when exiting my mortgage, I included the interest taking it up to £330. Just over two weeks later I got a cheque in the post for £210 which is more than I expected to receive!!!! Unfortunately two days before I received the cheque I sent them a snotty letter asking why they hadn't responded to me :D
