I just got a cheque from Abbey too, for £126.00. It couldn't have come at a better time as I also got a huge car repair bill today!

    Thank you Martin!

I read this article a few weeks ago and planned on getting back to it. Just did...... and after a 5 minute call to the Halifax I have a cheque for £125 winging its way to me. I am now in the process of writing to Britannia to see if I can get anything back from them too. Thanks Martin and all the other dedicated money savers, this site has saved me a small fortune since it was recommended to me about 18 months ago.
  • I sent a letter to the Bristol & West asking for a refund of the £195 MEAF on a mortgage I closed in Feb this year.

Response 1: (within a couple of days): an offer of a refund of £45 - the difference between "what it was when you took the mortgage out" (£150) and what it is today (£195).

I wrote again saying I'd never been quoted an actual amount and my contract just says I would be charged "a reasonable administration fee". So I asked for them to detail their true and actual costs.

Response 2 (again within a couple of days): An offer of the full £195 MEAF.

Thanks to Martin & all the posters on these boards for the inspiration and success stories!
  • I first took out a mortgage with the Royal Bank of Scotland in 1993, left them in 2005. When I read Martins email newsletter about the announcemant from the FSA, I dug out all my old letters and statements. I phoned the RBS and asked what I had paid (couldn't find a figure on any of the paperwork) Turned out I had paid a £225.00 'sealant fee'. I lodged a complaint and told them I wanted a refund.

Today I have been told that I am due a £150. refund as the sealant fee should only have been £75.!! A cheque is being sent out as we speak (write/read whatever!!)

Many thanks to Martin!! I'm emailing all my mates to sign up to the newsletter!

    Hi everyone,
I am so chuffed after reading this article and getting off my backside, I called Halifax on the dedicated 08451203033 and with just my roll no. dates of starting and leaving. I have got a refund of £75 pounds on the way.Yippee
  • Left Northern Rock 3 years ago, having been with them for about 4 years. Didn't have any paperwork, other than the roll number and date of leaving. Thought I would send off a speculative letter anyway and glad I did.
Getting cheque for £55 sent to me as NR wishes to 'conclude this matter amicably'. I am happy with that, £55 for a letter and stamp - thanks Martin!:money:
  • 2 minute phone call to the halifax, cheque for £75 in the post, thankyou very much that'll do nicely.
  • C & G will not pay because I took out a further advance two years earlier and they state that the conditions of the further advance updated and overwrote the original mortgage conditions.

We got our mortgage with Abbey in September, 2004 and re-mortgaged with Nat West two years later. Abbey charged us a two hundred and twenty-five pound 'sealing fee'... having read your article we phoned the number, filled in a form and two weeks later received a cheque for one hundred and forty six pounds - no questions asked! RESULT!!!!!!
