    After two letters to the Halifax they repaid the exit administration fee of £175 that they charged me in full.

    Portman (Now Nationwide) - 1 letter sent, 2 responese. 1 from Natiowide saying no you are not entitled to anything, the 2nd letter from Portman saying a Cheque for £60 on its way in full and final settlement. Cheque recieved - thanks a bunch!
    its not being tight - it make sense...
  • Martin, thank you so much for this information.

    I read the article today, made a telephone call and was refunded £140 as a direct bank transfer straight away.

    A five minute phone call with a £140 payoff! Hope everyone else is as successful.

    Just called Halifax. In July 2003 it was £75 and in September 2005 when I moved from them it was £175. A refund of £100 is in the post now.

    Took no more than 5 mins on the phone :)
    Quoting my original post (from 07-03-2007)
    as its been over a month now and no sign of any cheque. They did say it would take up to 30 days so has anyone else had payment after claiming at the same time?

    i originally had my mortgage with Standard Life but then 3 years ago moved to Portman. After reading Martin's advice, I phoned Standard Life and they advised me i was charged an exit fee of £150. i had no idea what was in the original contract so they told me to write to them as they would need to investigate. About 2 weeks later, I got a refund cheque for the full £150. Apparantly, they advised me that when I took the mortgage out with them, they did not tell me what the exit fee was, hence they gave me a full refund! All for the price of a 1st class stamp! Wot a result!!
  • hello, just read your post (I'm a bit slow)! I rang the Portman and was told to write in to "The Focus Group" at their head office (the address is on all their paperwork), I got a response back within 2 weeks, including a cheque for £109 (having been charged £199) - Don't be fobbed off, they will give it back!
  • Exit fee;
    At time of mortgage £150
    At time of redemption quoted @ £195
    Actual fee £275!!!

    One email (thanks Martin) + one phone call = one cheque for £130.86.
