  • Ask them to consider their decision again, I appealed and got the whole £250 back.
    Its worth a go!
  • Thanks Martin, I followed your advice and rang the Hinckley and Rugby BS on Monday and asked about the MEAF charges, in July 2006 I paid £195.00 when I finished my mortgage with them. They said they would look into it for me.. yesterday I received a cheque for £95.00 as they had overcharged me by this amount... great result!!!!
    Keep up the good work
  • i called abbey about the mortgage i settled in 2007 they were extremely helpful and sent me a form the straight away (although the form only asked for my mortgage account number so they could have done this over the phone) but i received it the next day and sent it back and a couple of days later i received a cheque for £129!!!!

was all very quick and easy

    Thanks!!! :money:

Thanks emmaleen, i think i will contcat them again in that case...i just have absolutely no knowledge of stuff like this and just thought id try some of Martin's fab advice....then i was stumped with the confusing reply!!! :)
  • Success, i have today recieved £126.00 from Abbey. I remortgaged 4 years ago and they took £225.00 as an exit fee, my contract was £99.00. It took just 10 days from posting my letter to receiving a cheque. Thanks money experts its all down to you.
  • Wrote to Bristol & West last Saturday using template letter with references to figures deleted as I haven't got a clue what I was quoted or paid. This was for 7 buy-to let mortgages. They wrote back on Monday offering £45 per mortgage as the fee in the offer was £150 but they charged £195. So £315 in total! They did put it as a "goodwill gesture", though clearly they overcharged in the first place!

I was about to accept rashly - their acceptance form said that I was accepting in full and final settlement - but then I decided that they hadn't addressed the issue over interest..... I worked out that based on a statutory 8% and the number of days from when the mortgages were redeemed to the date of my letter, the interest would amount to £72, so I've written back to them for their further comments!

Just wondering whether I should be asking for more anyway, as in effect they "stole" £315 from me....
  • Phoned B'ham Midshires BS after reading article last week. 4 days later letter back saying we had been charged £150 and should have been £100. Cheque to be sent. Letter gone of to Coventry BS to try the same. Cheeky so and so's
  • My original charge stated 50.00 but I was charged 75.00. Alliance & Leicester paid me interest so I had a cheque for 39.87. OK, it's not a huge amount but thanks to Martin Lewis I have got nearly 40.00 I didn't even know I was entitled too. Thank you. Excellent site. Vienna Marie

Why did you believe they would refund anything? Did they charge you more than what you agreed to?
