Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

Thanks Martin, Rang Natwest last week to query Mortgage Exit Fee,
the customer services used a nice ploy, "Hold the line please while I check your details" after a considerable pause returned to say that "the charges were in fact correct". I said that I was not happy with their decision, I asked who I should contact with my disagreement and was told the decision was final. I Downloaded Martin's template, sent it off, one week later a letter of apoligy arrived informing that I was overcharged and my account has been credited with £140 :T Thanks again!0 -
Used the letter from the website to send of complaint, left the letter very basic but asked for interest.
In less than a week, a cheque arrived for £88, £50 compensation and the rest interest.
Fantastic and worth a go, I left them in 2003 after 10 years, I had no account details but gave all current and previous addresses.
Thanks....:T0 -
Can someone enlighten me as to what other names an 'exit fee' would come under, is it the same as a redemption charge or early repayment charge. I have to say I'm very confused with all this.0

Mortgage exit charge or redemption charge would be normal. It is not any early repayment charge.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). After calling C & G to ask them about my MEAF the snooty lady at the end of the phone told me that I had not been overcharged, not sure as it was nearly 5 years ago and I cant find any paperwork I fired off one of the template letters and exactly 7 days later a cheque for £149 lands on my door mat - not bad as i had "not been overcharged"
Thanks very much Martin for bringing this to our attention. Keep up the excellent work :j:T:T:T0 -
I contacted the Halifax last night (apparently the line is open till 11pm) and the very pleasant lady who promptly answered checked for me and told me that a cheque for £110 would be in the post within the next 5 days.
That was on a mortgage taken out in 1998 and moved to another lender in 2005.
I needed my Halifax Mortgage Roll Number however, they would not proceed without it.
Not bad for 3 minutes on the phone.
Now to get onto the RBS.
Thanks MSE. :T0 -
A question - I am a Landlord and have many mortgages that have finished in the last few years. Between what dates is this MEAF claiming relevant?0

:T I sent off a template letter to Alliance & Leicester 1 week ago - a cheque arrived today for £210, as the MEAF they charged me was £295 when I closed the mortgage.
This was on a mortgage taken out in Nov 2003 and closed in Feb 2006.
Thanks MSE, keep up the excellent work.:beer:0 -
I have lost all my paperwork and Ive sent a letter to Abby and Bradford and Bingley, in a sort of template way minus the amounts and percentages, because I dont have a mathmatical mind..or the evidence.
I have heard nothing from Abbey National but I have had a reply from Bradford and Bingley saying they are looking into it all.
This will teach me not to throw out old paperwork. Wish me Luck! - UPDATE they will find your details so dont be put off if you no longer have your paperwork.
UPDATE-Bradford and Bingley have sent me a letter to say they are sending me a cheque for £25 as a gesture of goodwill. Not much but better in my pocket, everyone else seems to have far more than me? Thats for a mortgage taken out in 1993 and paid off in 1999
UPDATE-Still waiting on Abbey Nationals decision...they have acknoledged me though.0 -
Hi, new to this so be patient! My partner had a joint mortgage with her ex partner, and she bought him out when they split up. We phoned the Woolwich where the mortgage used to be, and they informed us that she was entitled to a refund of £225.00 (original contract stated £50.00, and when she took her own mortgage with the HSBC they charged her £275.00 to exit). They stated that they would have to issue a joint cheque in her and her ex partners name, which we challenged, but eventually told them to do so, as her bank will allow her to cash it anyway. She has now received a letter from the bank (Barclays - I assume own the Woolwich) stating that they will not pay out without the authorisation of her ex partner. I'm not sure that they can legally do this, as the refund is for money that my partner paid in her own right, not for the original contractual amount. Can anyone clarify this point, and advise of what to do in order to sort the situation, many thanks in advance.0
