Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

Hi
I'm new to the forum, but quite often have a look around on the MSE site. I stumbled across the 'MEAF' fee page and started to wonder. I took out a mortgage with NatWest back in April '04, and then sold up and cleared it towards the end of '06 due to having to rent a property after relocation.
I have no paperwork to find a closing statement, but I do have my original paperwork for when I took the mortgage out. There is a charges leaflet enclosed stating that there is a total fee of £85.
I called Natwest, gave my name and reference number, and explained that I have no closing statement to hand, but would like to know what the redemption fee I was charged. £225! I said that my contract states it should only be £85, he confirmed this, filled out account details very quickly over the phone, and told me to expect £140 into my account within the next 10 days.
Very happy I made the call, literally took less than 5 minutes.
Cheers

I have just called C&G and they can't help as I don'thave my mortgage account number. They reckon they can't search on address and name? Does that sound right?
I contacted C&G and never had any account numbers. They found my details but gave me the excuse that I wasn't due anything because i only had rough dates and property details. I said thats fine and that I would contact the solicitor i used for details as they had the paperwork. They then said they had a new computer system and managed to find all my details within minutes and I received 2 cheques so hang in there and don't put up with their excuses. GOOD LUCK!;)0 -

Wrote off 3 weeks ago to Mortgage Express (Bradford and Bingley) to reclaim excess fee charged when we redeemed mortgage in 2006. We were charged £175 instead of £50 and we requested the overpayment back. We received an acknowledgment straight away and then a letter telling us that although they didn't have to repay, they would be refunding the whole amount. Received cheque this week for the full amount of £175. Success!!!0

That was the old "small print". On more recent contracts you had to port the existing product to avoid the ERC, in common with most other lenders.I didn't port the product to a new property.
The small print stated that the charge would be waived if I took out a new mortgage with them on a new property, which is what I did.0 -
Its been on my to do list for a while. No idea whether I had any monies due or not.
So, on Monday (9th March) I wrote to the C&G using the template letter about possible overcharging of exit fees for a redemption I made in early 2005. I only had the property address, and rough date.
This morning I have received a letter back saying that a cheque is on the way for £155.76 (including £30.76 interest)! Delighted! :j
Even if you don't have the mortgage account no, its always with a punt.
Others I have written to:
if.com - have replied stating that I have paid the correct amount.
Abbey National - still waiting. Will keep you informed.
Have a good weekend.

I've just posted a note about C & G. Wrote to them with no account no, and only a rough. Received reply today stating that they will be making a refund. So, they can obviously search on address....go get em!!!0

Followed advice i contacted the two companies i have remortgaged from in the timescale namely Birmingham Midshires and Abbey. After a curt phone call from myself as they hadnt responded to my letter in three weeks finally have letter confirming they are to refund me the difference from contract to what i actually paid(BM) Abbey are being a bit more hard ball and I think I might need to get a law degree before understanding their very long letter however there was an official form to fill in if you were asking for a refund so I have filled it in and posted back fingers crossed but £50 back so far is great news to me thanks very much:j0

hi there..ive just had letter back from barclays/woolwich stating that as my mortgage started in oct 2005 the correct fee of £195 was paid! so how did you manage to get them to pay up! im gonna call and send another letter cos i think they make it up as they go along...Just made phone call to Woolwich as advised on MSE site.
I was told by a very helpful lady that I was charged £195 in 2004 and that it should have been £38.50.
So they are paying the difference of £156.50 plus the interest of £29.24 (total £185.74) directly in to my account in the next 3-5 days.
It has made my day!
Thanks to Martin and all at MSE.:T
