Took out mortgage with Abbey in 1997. Paid 225 pounds MEAF in 2006. They sent me the 'are you eligble for a refund form' which I returned over six weeks ago. Called them today as not heard a whisper. They haven't recieved so will send me another. There is a possibility that it has got lost in the post but I doubt it. Should I send the next form as recorded delivery? Has this happened to anybody else? Why does it take Abbey so long when other providers are giving refunds within days?
Thanks0 -
A breakdown of the charge is irrelevant. If you signed up for a deal with a £295 MEAF, then that's legally and morally what you should pay.Hi there. I am currently in the process of remortgaging and have been advised by A&L that they are to levy a MEAF of £295. I have constructed a letter asking for a breakdown of their charges but at this time I still remain with them. Am I better waiting till I have settled with my new lender or should I pursue getting it down now. Are there any tips for what should or should not go in the letter.
Thanks
Fox
If the deal stated a different MEAF, then that's what they should be asking you for and what you should pay.0 -
Hi all
Just to let you know that after making a phone call to Abbey I received the 'eligibility form' in the post, returned it and within 10 days have now received a cheque for £130 :j I am so happy :T
My mortgage was taken out in 2002 and redeemed in 2007 and paid £225 to exit. It's so nice to get something back for a change.
Good luck to all with your claims and a big thank you to Martin and the team :A  cheers!0 -
We sold our house and paid off our mortgage in March.
I phoned Barclays this morning and agreed a refund of £180 of the £275 final fee.0 -
Just made a 2 minute phone call to the Abbey, 2 forms to fill out and will recieve a cheque for 45 quid, thanks.Thankyou Sir Alex for 26 years0

The Halifax has just verbally agreed to pay me £35. It's not a huge amount (apparently my fee should've been 40 quid & they charged me 75 back in 2001) but it's better in MY pocket than theirs, I reckon! Thanks for the tip-off.Expect the worst & hope for the best...0

Hi All
A huge thank you to Martin and his team
Just want to say that after reading about MEAF refunds I got in touch with The Halifax with whom I settled my mortgage back in 2003. Despite having no remaining documentation regarding my mortgage, I still qualified for a £35 refund, which although only a modest amount is always very welcome - all for the cost of a phone call and a stamp. Well worth doing.0 -
I have successfully reclaimed my entire £250 MEAF from Northern Rock, even though it was in my original mortgage contract. I asked them to justify it by giving me a breakdown of how the figure was arrived at. When they refused, I threatened to go to the industry watchdogs and the FSA, on the grounds that they must be hiding something, and they paid up in full without a whimper.:rotfl:0

Evening all
I changed my mortgage from B&B to Britannia three years ago and got charged £235. I sent a copy of Martin's letter with a few alterations and demanded my money back. I've just had a cheque for £185.
Thankyou very much Martin!

After watching It Pays To Watch I was inspired to write to Yorkshire Building Society questioning ny exit fee which they charged when I redeemed my mortgage in 2004.I didn't have any documents to prove what I paid or the original contract when I took out the mortgage ,only the account number, however, after only a month I have received a cheque for £51.50 It was that easy.
Thank you Martin:j0
