We remortgaged from Northern Rock to Leeds Building Society in Oct last year so earlier this year I sent a letter based on the template provided and received a cheque for £75 no questions asked. All they did was send us a form to sign to say that we agreed with the amount and then they issued the cheque. Not a bad return for the price of a stamp!!

Thanks to MSE i have made 4 successful claims with previous mortgage lenders for rebate on my MEAF. Halifax paid back £70, RBoS paid back £150, Bradford & Bingley paid back £140 and Lloyds TSB paid back £47. These amounts total to over £400 and thanks to MSE this will go towards a very Happy Christmas!
  • I had a mortgage with the Halifax for 10 y + but changed when the rates were high. They levied a number of fees, I followed the suggested procedure and the Halifax returned £135 as soon as the disclaimer letter was received. Thank you Martin. I am working on the credit card charges!

  • Hi,

I had a mortgage originally with Leeds Permanent which were bought out by Halifax. I closed the mortgage 10 years ago. Although I still had the account details I had no idea if they had charged me an exit fee. I wrote a polite letter to them asking them to check my account and received a cheque for £40.
  • Thanks. £50 cheque in post. Not as much as I expected but can't complain.

Apparently the Cheltenham & Gloucester fee was stated as £180 when I took out my mortgage in Nov 2004 and they charged me £225. They quickly and nicely agreed to pay the £45 difference plus interest at £4.15.

I didn't have the documentation so guess I have to accept what they are saying. They'd obvioulsy had a few calls and I think they dealt with it very well.
  • seriously everyone - this is easier than falling off a log! One phone call, 2 claims, £35 better off for it. My own money back. Many thanks to Martin - I owe you a beer!
  • My 1st mortgage was with GMAC and I re-mortgaged last November. As advised by Martin, I rang GMAC this morning and told them 'I wanted to reclaim my old mortgage exit fee'. They told me I was entitled to a £30 refund. On my mortgage Summary sheet the Redemption Administration Fee is £115.00 and Deeds Production fee is £40.00. Should I accept the £30 or ask for more? I dont want to sound greedy but Im fired up after reading the advice on this site and want to reclaim as much of my money as possible and then Ill treat everyone to a beer!

On what grounds do you think you should have more?

A lot of people don't seem to understand why they are getting a lower amount than everyone else. Much depends on when you took out, and then repaid the mortgage.

I took out mine in 2000. The Exit fee was quoted as £85. I left in 2005, and was charged £225. Thats why i got £140 back.

If you only had the mortgage for 2 years, it is likely that the difference was much lower, and therefore, you are due less money back.
