Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

Just wanted to report a success! After reading MSE I tried to reclaim from 2 mortgage companies - Abbey, and Halifax (2 mortgages). I received £100 from the Abbey, £50 from the Halifax for one mortgage and £10 from the Halifax for another. Not a fortune but I'm glad I claimed it!!!
It was worth filling in one form and making one phone call! I'm also pleased to report that shortly after reading the MSE, my independent financial advisor who arranges my mortgages actually called me to inform me of doing this and gave me all the helpline/claiming phone numbers - restored my faith in humanity!if i had known then what i know now0 -
Just took me about 3 mins to claim back £108 from Barclays via a phonecall, how easy was that?
Realised I'd previously had an RBS mortgage and phoned them and they are calling it a "sealing fee" of £75 and saying I agreed to it when I took the mortgage out so won't give it back.
I am of course not doubting the fact I may have signed for this but the fact is that I'm saying the charge is unrealistic and want it all back or at least £25 since the FSA ruled that £50 is realistic.
I must admit I don't see many RBS success stories on here to do with any over charging refunds so I wonder if they play hard ball a bit more?0 -
I put off completing my claim because I didn't have a record of what I was originally quoted as a MEAF and my mortgage was with The Leeds Permanent which no longer exists.
In the end I just said I should have paid in the region of £55 (which was the figure Martin quoted for Halifax).
I was in fact charged an MEAF of £150.
I have now received an offer of £110 as Halifax informed me I was quoted £40 in 1995. Needless to say I have written to accept the £110 and await the cheque with anticipation.0 -
Hi and thank you very much, one phone call to A & L re the 295 redemption fee which was paid Feb 2005 and a cheque arrived one week later for 210!!!!
Unbelievable that so many people are unaware of what they can claim back!
Thank you very much.0 -
RBS just got back and offered as a "gesture of goodwill" to refund the whole £75 although still claim it was a legally agreed fee.
So £183 from 2 companies for 10 minutes of phonecalls...hooray for Moneysavingexpert.com I say, just in time for Christmas!!

I got £191 (including interest) back from Woolwich!! Luckily I had kept the info like account number etc so the 'phone call was very short. Would not have known about this if it had not been for this site, so a BIG thank you to Martin Lewis!0

Just had our second piece of success - £160 back from Abbey in addition to the previous £275 cheque from A&L.
None of the other mortages we've had were eligible as we were charged as per the contracts. However, I have just renewed another 2 year deal with Nationwide, and their exit fees are still only £90 which is way better than the other lenders, especially when their rates were equally as good, and even the "product fee" wasn't too bad considering I didn't have any of the costs like valuations and legal fees that switching vendors may have incurred.- Jeff K -0 -
I confess I did not reclaim "morgage exit fees" after reading the article by Martin, but after reading in the papers that the mortgage providers had been told they were in the wrong. I had paid off my £15k mortgage altogether in 2005, having had the mortgage for 11 years, with Halifax. They charged me £275, when the redemption fee in the original documents was stated as £40. At the time I argued the toss and wrote to them, but they wrote back telling me to get lost.
After I wrote to them following the ruling I got a cheque for £235. :j I told my sister and they also received back a chunk of money. The letter or phone call is worth it!0 -
last week i rang up all & lec with whom i had my last morgage said i wasnt sure how much i paid for exit fees i didnt even have my account no! they said a letter would be sent within 7 days i got the letter 2 days later and guess what 4 days later, today, ive just recieved a cheque for £220 wow no hassle and just 1 phone call
