Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

Hi.
I have just received a letter from Northern rock stating I agreed to the original quote of £250 exit fee and that was what i was charged. However , i think this is also too high. has anyone gone the next step and said they think this was too much and asked for a breakdown of fees, or indeeed been successful in a refund after this stage.
I would appreciate any feedback as i would like to send the second complaint, but am wondering how successful i would be. Thankyou0 -

After several offers from Northern Rock to refund £20 of our Discharge of Mortgage fee (Which was £195 in 2004) we decided to quote what Martin Lewis had said (ask for a full breakdown of what they did to justify the fee) in our most recent letter to them - low and behold they offered us a FULL refund of £195!! As they said in their letter to us that Northern Rock doesnot want to be in dispute with their customers.Thank you very much Northern Rock and Martin Lewis!!0

hi

after readin martins site, i decided to check out my previous morgage details with the birmingham & midshire. they had charged me £150.00 vacating fee, when there t&c`s leaflet said id only get charged £80.00 and also they had charged me £543.02 early repayment fee..when i had finished my 3 yr fixed rate morgage with them.
so i challenged them on both these amounts and got a lovely letter from them today saying they owed me £70.00 for the vacating fee they had overcharged me and that i didni owe them the early repayment fee either of £543.02 plus interest of £76.00 would be on its way to me in a cheque.... if i accept this offer....
im over the moon with getting back wats owed to me.
keep up the good work martin your site is brilliant.:T0 -
Contacted Abbey by telephone and they agreed to send form. Once received and completed we received a cheque for £126.00 straight away. The only problem was they made it out to the wrong initials, but once we notified them they sent another correct one. Thank you Martin. Any more good advice to beat the banks.

After hearing all the recent publicity about reclaiming Mortgage Exit Fees, I tried the lazy way mentioned in Martin's info and simply phoned up the lender I left in January 2007, GE Money, and told them I was calling to 'reclaim my Mortgage Exit Fee' and gave them my old mortgage reference. They said I should receive a cheque in 17-21 working days.
Yesterday, I got a cheque for £23.75. In their covering letter they said that they had recently reviewed their redemption fees and since I was charged £200 to close my mortgage account and their fee has since been reduced to £176.25, the £23.75 I received was the difference.
Going by previous members' results, I was hoping for a bit more, so today I researched back through my mortgage paperwork and found that they had clearly explained there would be an administration charge of £200! So I guess, all in all, I got £23.75 for the price of a phone call - not a bad return!
I have recommended this website to loads of my friends and printed off the stuff about reclaiming bank charges for my brother. More power to you, Martin!

I rang Scarborough BS on Wednesday only armed with a mortgage account number. I asked to speak to someone about the possibility that I had been overcharged when I redeemed my mortgage. I was told someone from Customer satisfaction would ring me within 48 hours.
They didn't.
However, a cheque arrived in the post for £145 this morning, with a letter showing the charges I'd signed up to and the charges I'd paid.
Excellent service.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

After reading the info on the website yesterday, I called the Abbey, and have found out that I am due £252 from two previous mortgages. I have fired off the template letter, and am also chancing my arm in asking for the interest!!! I also called the Halifax, who admitted that I was due £35 back, and will send me a cheque within 28days, no further action required! Now for the credit card charges...what a buzz to right these wrongs - thank you Martin!:T0
