    They don't charge a MEAF.
  • I hung about for weeks before bothering to make the call to the Halifax folloiwng paying off my mortgage. No problem £75 will be in the post within 28 days. Then remembered I had changed mortgage lender a year before paying off the mortgage, sure enough another call this time to Birmingham Midshires and they have said they will look into it - no promises though.
On a roll I rang my daughters previous lender also the Halifax, sure enough they promised to refund £75, like me she had also remortgaged a year before from the Bank of Scotland, another call and a promise of £25 from them.
Can't thank Martin enough for his advice and helpful sheet of telephone numbers which got me started - you are brilliant!!!!!
  • A few successes to report - called the Woolwich last Wednesday - less than 5 minutes on the phone - £144.06 in my my account by Saturday. My friend called Lloyds and was told a cheque for £98 plus interest would be sent out. My parents called the Halifax the same day and a cheque for £60 is being sent.

We may still have more money to collect. Abbey have asked for a claim form to be completed and Northern Rock ask for a letter to be sent in.

In particular the Woolwich and the Halifax deserve a mention for their prompt efficiency.

    I've been spreading the word.
  • Hi Everyone

I Rang the Nat West Yesterday and just said that I think they may owe some money for my exit fee. Gave them my name date of birth they found my details straight away and within two minutes of ringing them I was told they owe me £140.00.

That will now be transfered into my account within the next 7 days.

How easy was that? Thank you Martin:T
  • A five minute phone call to Halifax got me £75 back without any drama or conflict, A&L and Direct Line are 'looking into it' for me & should write within 14 days. Best phone call I've made in ages, thank you

Made two quick and easy calls to Barclays and Direct Line, although we are not owed anything it was done politly and easily explained so am happy-at least l checked!thanks to every one here at MSE for giving me the idea anyway-much appreciated as nothing ventured nothing gained
:j this money saving is such fun:T
  • Hi all,

Just another couple of successes to add to this list; both actually happened a year ago... but only just joined this site and i'm still finding my way around! Apologies if this is in the wrong place! :D

Had a mortgage with Abbey a few years back and managed to reclaim their whole exit fee back, think it was £250... just asked them to break down what the fee was for... they couldn't (or wouldn't!) so got the money returned with no further hassle! :T

Also success with Halifax, again went at it from the angle of 'prove it costs that much to administer the closure of the mortgage', required a little more effort than the Abbey claim but got again got the whole £175 back... :j

Well worth the time it took to sort out...

Thanks and good luck to everyone claiming...
  • Thanks Martin-
saw you on TV last week, as a result rang the Royal Bank of Scotland who we changed our mortgage from in February this year and did exactly as you said. Asked what exit fee was in our original contract - £100, asked what we had paid - £225, and asked for a refund. Gave them our account number and £125 will be refunded within the next 10 days.

Now going to tackle the bank charges, and Firstplus re. PPI as we were mis-sold the policy, and having remortgaged in Feb adding this loan to the mortgage, now realised what fools we have been. Really incensed about this one what a con!

    Wish me luck
  • Had a Bradford & Bingley Mortgage 1996 to 2005. Read Martins piece on bank charges and reclaiming. Downloaded template letter, changed a few words then posted it. 5 minutes of work and 10 days later I have £185 cheque in my hands. Power to the knowledge. Next time you are in the North West of England Martin, let me buy you a pint or three! Sincere thanks.
