Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

I fired off a brief ambigous letter to Portman BS last week - kind of like this "i had a mortage with you from Dec 95 to Aug 98, here's the address, don't know the account number, don't know how much exit fee i should have paid or did eventually pay, please let me know the figures. Thank you"
today received a letter saying that they should have charged £50, but actually charged £90. Thus an overcharge of £40, however as gesture of goodwill, they enclosed a cheque for full £90 !!!!:T
THANKYOU MSE:beer:0 -
Apologies first of all if this is not strictly the correct area.
I have had a Rapid Repay Mortgage with the Clydesdale for just under 3 years, and have had to pay a MEAF of £195 in the last few days. If it states this amount in the original agreement (which I confess I haven't checked yet as I am at work) can I still apply for some sort of refund?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Checked my paperwork from 3 years ago when I got in last night and original fee on my first account statement reads £125. Phoned the Clydesdale this morning and explained this to them and a refund of £100 has been added to my account already. I assume the extra £30 is by way of an apology????
Anyway definitely worth picking up the phone or writing even if you've not had your mortgage that long.0 -
I redeemed my mortgage in 2000, just recived £30.00 refund of the £50 I was charged by the Halifax. Not much but its in my account now not theirs.0

First tried to claim my MEAF back in March, after a couple of weeks I rang B+B as I had no correspondance from them, they told me they had 'not received my letter' and to write to a different address:mad: .After 2 more weeks still no news so another phone call to them, this time they said they would send out correspondance with in a week, well guess what 2 weeks on still nothing, so this morning I called AGAIN,this time they FOUND my letter and have issued me a cheque for £140:j :.So don't give up out there make a nusiance of yourself if you have to.:T Thanks Martin for the info on MEAF:A0

I am a little confused.
I phone Halifax and was lead to believe I would get a cheque back for £35.
Today I received a cheque for £75.
Now, I know that whilst I was with them I went from one mortgage to another product to include pay off a secured loan used to buy an investment property.
The problem is that I took out my initial Mortgage on 1994 and paid it off in 2003 when we moved. Does the £75 sound about right or should I expect more?Behind every great man is a good womanBeside this ordinary man is a great woman£2 savings jar - now at £3.42:rotfl:0 -
I have tried to work through the minefield that is reclaiming my Mortgage Exit Fee but everything is very confusing for me.
I sent the letter off to Northern Rock 2 weeks ago, claiming back my MEAF of £250 (or part of it as they can't justify £250 for some admin etc)
This morning a letter came through saying that 'at the time your most recent mortgage contract began, the DOM fee was £175. I have arranged to refund the difference between the amount that we charged you £250 and the fee that applied at the start of this mortgage contract (£175)
So I can send you a cheque for £75 please sign the enclosed........... etc etc
Now, I know I do not know the first thing about this, but am I not being ripped off here ? I have paid £250 for me DOM fee and they are suggesting they pay a difference ?! They have not justified costs etc.
Although I would be happy with £75, should I ask them to explain it to me and why I am not getting closer to the £200 mark (allowing for £50 for admin etc) ?
Any advice would be greatfully received, or to point me to a thread where this has been answered already. I did do a search, but just got confused with everything as banks etc are not my forte.
Thanks in advance****************************0 -
I paid £200 last year to leave my mortgage, but my original contract had no exit fee. I rang Standard Life and was told then I was eligible for a full refund. I received a letter confirming this a few days later and received the money in my bank yesterday. Time taken: 2 weeks! Fantastic. Many thanks MartinTreat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0

:T I re-mortgage regularly and thankfully had kept all of my paperwork and found Abbey had increased my exit fees on 2 occasions. (1st £50 to £85; 2nd £85 to £225) I wrote asking for the difference and 8% interest and received 2 cheques 1st for £35 and 2nd for £126 (the 2nd cheque should have been for at least £140) but no interest. I returned the cheques and again requested the correct amount plus 8% interest per year. I have just received a letter informing me that I will receive a cheque re the difference and interest at 6.5% + 1% = £25.60 (as a matter of goodwill), this is just £3.00 short of the amount I initially requested at 8% interest. I am happy to accept but would never have known of this had it not been for the website. Thank you Martin it can be done, just two letters and stamps and I have been promised a refund of £200.60.0
