Mortgage Exit Fees successes and failures

  • I rang the Halfiax a while ago and got £10 back, and then phoned Birmingham Midshires, who I'd had a mortgage with as well, to ask if I had paid more for the exit fee than originally specified. BM did not seem as up to speed as Halifax (surprising as they're the same group) and asked me to phone back. On phoning a few weeks later I explained the situation and they were non-commital on the phone. However, they then wrote to me saying they were treating my question as a complaint.
A few days later they wrote to me offering to refund the whole mortgage exit fee of £150, which I agreed to and I've now received and banked the cheque.

Still waiting to hear myself but put my friend on to the link who is about to pay her endowment mortgage with Abbey. They had been told £240 exit charge to pay, she went in and complained and guess what now only have to pay £50.
  • Hello all.
Having paid £225 in redemption charges at the end of 2005, I thought I would try to reclaim some. I couldn't quite recall the exact date of commencement of the mortgage and from Martin's article I had hoped to get back £70, but I called Halifax today and got back £135! Hoorah! I normally end up owing THEM money! Thanks Martin, it made my day.:money:

I posted that Abbey had refunded £45 saying it was the difference to what I'd agreed to pay when I took out the mortgage but I was confused about the numbers quoted. So I wrote to them asking them to explain the numbers. They treated it as a complaint and said that although they couldn't 'uphold my complaint', as a gesture of goodwill they were going to refund the £54. The cheque arrived this morning, so that means I haven't paid a redemption fee! WHOOHOO! Lucky me.

    Hi all,
Just come off the phone to the Halifax (had a mortgage with them from 2004 - 2006) and it turns out we are due a refund of £100! :D

As others have mentioned, the Halifax seem well prepared for this, they have options for it on their telephone menu system, and the lady I spoke to knew exactly what I wanted.

Was told we'll receive the cheque within 28 days, but she said it's usually much quicker :D

Thanks Martin, wouldn't have even known about this if I hadn't found your site! - off to sort out the Woolwich now for some bank charges - (before they swap completely to Barclays ;) )

After a lot of deliberation I finally sent a template letter to Northern Rock.
I didn't dare use the one asking for interest also as I didn't have my original agreement and so wasn't even sure I would be entitled to anything.
Anyway a week later I got a letter saying a cheque for £55 will follow - all I had to do was reply and advise who cheque should be made payable to.

We only just took out another mortgage on our new home with Northern Rock so when the cheque arrives we plan on opening our Mortgage Pig and putting it all together and making another adhoc payment on the mortgage!
It's an exciting feeling this! lol
    Dream of being mortgage free....

  • Hello all,
I have been a little lapse at not viewing Martin's site for a little while :o

But I thought that I ought to let you know that I have just received a cheque for £120 from the Alliance & Leicester for the difference in charges from the £75 fee that was quoted initially, and the £195 that was actually charged. I sent my letter on the 11th May and received the cheque on 22nd May - so it wasn't a long wait!

It was only my wife mentioning to me that she had seen an article about it that I followed it up. So it's important to keep up to date viewing the articles on the site :D

    Thanks Martin :T

Sent copy of Martin's standard letter to Yorkshire Building Society on 26th April, although didn't even know what we had paid when we re-mortgaged a few years ago. Very quickly got letter back to say they would investigate.

Received cheque for £105.50 on 16th May with explanation, all for the cost of a stamp.

    Thank you very much Martin!
