Martin, you're a financial genius. Thank you.
I got my mortgage 3 years ago and changed it a year ago to another company.
One short phone call to Halifax later and I'm due a cheque for £75 .
They worked it out in an instant for me when I gave them my mortgage roll number.0 -
Yup, just called the Halifax and got a refund coming for £1000

Read about this on your website on 4th May 2007 so I got out all my details from when I remortgaged last year. I paid off the mortgage I had with Bradf and Bingley in May 2006 and found that I had been charged £235.00, this was made up of £175 redemption fee and £60.00 deeds release fee. I rang them the same day and was told to put my concerns in writing. I wrote a letter of a few lines quite simply asking them to 'please refund the money I paid with relation to MEAF' and I just quoted my name, address, D.O.B and the dates my mortgage was taken out and then repaid. I didn't go into any detail as to be honest I didn't really understand everything beind it, and I didn't want to look silly! This was posted on the 4th May 2007. This morning, the 10th May, I have received a letter stating they are sending me a refund of £160!!!! Treats!!! Can't believe it, all that for the price of a phone call and a stamp! My advise is to go for it!!!!!
Thanks very much Martin.
Not the same for me.
I spoke to Bradford & Bingley on the 3rd May. I was told to send a letter with all the details I could find and they would reply to me within 21 days. I've received an acknowledgement of my letter but nothing else as yet - will keep my fingers crossed.0 -
Hi,
I've had quite good results from both the Leeds & Holbeck and the Alliance & Leicester.
Leeds & Holbeck
They originally charged me £195. After contacting them the immediately gave me a refund of £125 without quibbling.
Alliance & Leicester
They charged me £295 when I redeemed my mortgage last year (after only a year with them.) In the contract it did state that the redemption fee was £295 but I thought I'd chance my arm. I sent them a letter asking for a breakdown of the costs.
I got a standard letter telling me that I'd agreed to the charge when I'd signed up. So basically I could whistle. However they didn't send me a breakdown.
I then rang them and said I wasn't happy and would like a breakdown of the charges. They said that they would send it out in the post.
I heard nothing for two weeks so rang them again this Tuesday and asked why I hadn't been sent a breakdown. They said it must be an oversight and they'd have something in the post by the end of the week.
True to their word I recieved a letter this morning with an attached cheque for the full amount of £295.
Overall
£125 + £295 = £420 for about 45mins work
THATS £9.33 per minute. Not a bad little earner if I do say so myself.0 -

I received a refund of £195 within 10 days from Bradford & Bingley for a mortgage I took out in 1992 and paid off in 2006. All thanks to this site.
They wouldn't pay interest which I asked for at £10 but the refund was for £30 more than I anticipated so I let it go.
