  • I can spot a charity shop even as Im driving past at high speed and get very excited lol. God need to get a life.:rotfl:

Sounds like you have got a good life to me - I get very excited when I visit new towns & I always check out the charity shops first. Found some amazing stuff over the years, & haven't bought anything from a "proper clothes shop" for years (except undies & stuff for kids). I have bought shoes from CS but only for occasional wear - I walk so much that I live in decent walking shoes.

Congrats Desperate Housewife :j. I'm just re-starting a book keeping course that I'd put off due to sight problems but as I'm not employed now it seems an ideal time to get off my behind & get on with it. Hopefully by this next time year I'll be posting that I've passed.

7 week wonder - thanks for the link as I hadn't heard of that site before. There are several 20 miles from me so I shall research the public transport & see if any are doable.

**Rant alert** Our public transport system is pretty hit & miss & can't always be relied on! My 2 kids & I went to the dentist in the next town (10-15 min drive from my house) but it took hours. The first bus to the bus station didn't turn up so after waiting 20 mins we had to dash there on foot through the pouring rain. Just caught the next bus & got to dentist with minutes to spare. Leaving the dentist first bus turns up a bit late, but by now it was rush hour so to be expected. Then a 35 minute wait for the next bus when they are supposed to be every 15 mins.... Often our Saturday service just doesn't run at all (only 5 buses/day) & I've had to resort to a cab  home when the bus hasn't turned up at all. I did complain & was told I must have been mistaken as the service had run.

Poor DD's shoes are still wet from yesterdays trip to the dentist, so she has had to wear trainers to school (so she is delighted :rotfl: & I've had to write a note).

Also had to go to M&S for a gift card and 3 times picked up a "bargain" from the food shelves only to put it back with the realisation that if i don't need it and may not use it then it isn't a bargain.

    I'm learning!

I've just found myself doing similar - I love this site!

Pearla*Merle - thanks for the onion info! I shall spend tomorrow experimenting with pencils, potato slices (making mash so no sacrificial potato needed :D) & in true MSE style I will not buy a small fan but will use my bigger fan that I use in the summer! I shall report back...

Hornetgirl - hope all goes well with DH's job.
And I find that looking back at you gives a better view, a better view...

:o I work in the NHS please do not feel bad about keep ringing and chasing unfortunatly it is something you have to do, and if poss write down all the questions you have before you go for the pre op that way you wont forget or get flustered when you are there, good luck.

Hornetgirl - I bought our WM a couple of years ago from comet clearance online auction, I paid less than a third of its real cost as it was a return, I then purchased the five year extended warranty for £110, making total cost less than a cheapy machine, with advantage of longer warranty, larger machine and more energy efficient.

Aaaaaarrrgggh, the washing machine went kaput last night. Online searching suggests that the cost of the repair won't be worth it, so looks like it's time for a new one :(
We do have an emergency fund available for such eventualities but it isn't very big. The absolute max we would be able to spend is £400. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good, reliable, inexpensive replacement please? The old one was an LG and it lasted 8 years 2 months, which doesn't seem very much to me. Before that we had a Candy which I think clocked up about 14 years, but memory may be a bit dodgy on this.
Meanwhile mil has kindly offered the use of her machine, so will be lugging our dirty washing round there later.

I've had a Bosch for 12 years and would definitely buy another. SIL was looking to buy one at the weekend and found a good deal on line for a Bosch that was definitely less than £400

kids used to be fed a large spoonful every day to "keep them regular"

Also pregnant women used tobe given it to assist with labour....that that is no longer recommended as it can make Baby have diarrhoea and he may then inhale it during the birth, with disasterous results :naughty:

When DS was nearly 2 weeks late i drank a bottle of castor oil :o Did what it was supposed to do, but didn't make the baby come sooner :( Felt like I'd had a colonic though - never been so full of energy :rotfl:

I feel your pain. After a series of machines that only lasted 3-5 years I got an ISE which is the best I've ever had. It was almost £1000, so I thought long & hard, but it does have a 10 year guarantee & their service bods are fantastic, so I can't rave about them enough. At the time I had a serial bedwetter who managed to wet through everything & one with severe eczema whose clothes & wraps were always covered in gunky ointments, so it has certainly been put through its paces. The max spin means I don't need a TD & stuff often dries overnight even with the heating off.

I've had a Beko dishwasher & freezer for almost 5 years with no problems, & I remember their prices being much more reasonable.

Grey Queen - I'm going to listen to that programme about Greece tonight when I shall try & finish knitting my DD gloves. Sounds like I should pour a glass before it starts though. I did see the Peston programme, & one about RBS both of which were interesting & depressing in equal measure & a lot of which sailed straight over my fluffy little head :rotfl:
Mardatha. Thats a horrible forecast. Makes me want to hibernate with tea and bourbons.

What about wine & popcorn? Mardatha - you are not really selling Scotland to me! I'm sure it is wonderful in summer....

Also my fil's partner swears by drying off after bath or shower with a flannel. She says it does the job just as well, dries out quickly and takes a tiny space in the wash pile/machine.

My ex (military) was very proud that he could have a strip wash in a tiny amount of water (think sardine can) & dry off with a flannel! At the time I thought "why?" but now I wonder if it isn't a good idea from the MSE POV. Mind you, that would mean he was right so I can't have that :rotfl:

I'm off to do the school run - lovely sunshine but jolly cold wind so I'm wearing a fleece PJ top under my ski jacket & warm walking trews. Completing the look with thermal hat & gloves & hiking boots. I expect the yummymummies at my school will all be there in the Boden & long boots, jaunty hats & false smiles - don't let it bother you Fuddle, just laugh (inwardly or you may get a reputation for being weird) & ignore them. Sorry no news on OH job yet.
And I find that looking back at you gives a better view, a better view...
