And I got nettles by the yard, so would love to know how to make some thing useful out of them rather than just cursing the wretched things as I strim them to death! (but they are good for the wildlife,so I do leave a patch standing proud)

Nettle soup is fantastic, but try nettle pesto too....

Just watch out if you use pine nuts that they are good quality ones, not the chinese ones causing 'pine mouth' I'm pretty sure (as pine nuts are expensive anyway) that I used something else, but I can't remember what...it would have been sunflower seeds, cashews or walnuts prolly?

Sending you lots of hugs, take a deep breath and then phone the hospital and ask them where that letter is. Ask if you can collect it when you go for your pre op check on Thursday.

Well done on the mincemeat keeping so well. I admit usually buy mine and although trying to be more OS, this year as wasn't sure if I would be up to making it, but actually feel energetic enough to day to do so - although should have actually gone into the city with friends today to have a look round and buy some material for new cushions covers and not that energetic so friend going to see if she can pick me up some. Have all the ingredients in to make HM Mincemeat so we shall see if I can do so.

One thing I don't have any covers for the jars just the lids will that be enough to keep them fresh - although do have my 3 brand new Kilner jars but wanted to use them for marmalade, bought a tin of Seville oranges to have a go making it, doing it the lazy way in the BM ( my last effort many years ago was a rather messy disaster). Its when I look at recipes they always say put the waxed paper over jar then the lid.

Try to stay calm, I know not easy with an op on the horizen.

    Hugs:A

I have phoned the hospital and spoken to the Surgeon's secretary who was very puzzled and said she would ring me back. She's just phoned to tell me that their new computer system that is being installed has been creating all the letters needing to be sent out, but the department in charge of actually sending them out can't print anything so a lot of letters are just sitting there waiting :( crikey you couldn't make it up could you? I wonder how many poor folk are going to miss important appointments? Anyway she is emailing me the letter so I should get it later today.

It was my first time at making mincemeat last year and it was so much nicer than shop bought. I just used strealised ordinary jam jars with the original lids, I didn't use any waxed paper. It's been kept in a cool dark cupboard and is fine :T Hope you enjoy making and eating yours.

Even though I have sorted out the hospital, taken several deep breaths and drunk a vat of tea, I still feel stressed to the hilt - I think I need a good dose of Jane Austen and some cake.... and maybe some chocolate.

  • DAFT question but is corn oil sunflower oil??????

Nope two diffferent types of oil, but I have yet to find a recipe that calls for one type of oil that you cannot use another - I only every have olive oil in and use it in everything that says some other oil, ok if its a nut oil that is suggested it might change the taste a bit, but never found that mattered, I just refuse to have lots of different oils in that only every will have a bit used. I just by a mild olive oil so not a strong taste to it.

I just wish it would stop raining here, well it does for maybe an hour tops then heavens open again and each burst is so heavy, so far no more hailstones today, but would be nice to have a bit of time without the rain, want to go out and plant some holly bushes, but ground is going to be so heavy to dig even the small holes needed and every time I think will go and do it, its pouring again. Poor bushes have been sitting in their pots in the back since I bought then two weeks ago.

Boo! Had my nose to the grindstone. You've all moved over here! LOL!

At home today, got two more fruit cakes in the oven (the sugar free recipe I found) As I've been comissioned for one of the first two I made, I thought I ought to try one out , being a new recipe and all. It's very good, and really very sweet considering. So two more in today, and having handed samples around may get another comission.

Not feeling 100% to be honest, I struggle a bit at Xmas time (maybe a touch of SAD) but I also have a bad 'anniversary' at Xmas which doesn't help. I've got radio 2 on, cried through Carole King singing "too late" Live, and even rolling stones "all over now" and they got to Nat King Cole "When I fall in love" seriously though might be better with it off! Then they played Rebecca Fergusson, and with a bit of luck my pre-release ordered copy might arrive today, so that will be nice, hope the songs aren't too 'dark'

My daughter at Uni was on skype again last night beeing miserable, and I'm really struggling to cheer her up, we are on the "11 sleeps till you come home' now method :( all the time at the back of my mind I'm thinking s***, s***, s*** I'd better get a move on organising where she's sleeping, buying an Xmas AND a birthday pressie.

The DS has a day off today too, promised he'd do some stuff for me but I can't wake him up sigh. He's making me angry now so I've given up calling him, but inside I'm seething.

Lashing down with terrible rain and wind, so not much chance of getting the dogs out again....poor goggies.

Chicken curry tonight. I have paid a little bit of money to buy in the relevent spices as want to make curry via spices and chopped tomatoes. I think in the long run it will be cheaper than jars of sauces.

Do you have a shop where you can just weigh out how much of each spice etc. you need? We have here which is wonderful & I get lots of rice, flour etc. as well as tiny amounts of odd spices (3p for black mustard seeds is my record!).

Suzid - so sorry to hear about your dog. I'm a cat girl myself & remember beind devastated about my last cat's death (even though he was an aloof so & so). Have a dodgy hug :grouphug:

Grandma247 - thanks for the info again about onions & coconut milk. Would never have thought about adding it to oats, sounds delicious.

Hello Stillstruggling- I love your username (IYKWIM - I don't mean I love the fact that you are still struggling :rotfl:)
oh I love pink shrimps :T I like the bananas and I love the MrT bag of value banana, strawberry and orange sweeties. But shrimps are still the bestest ;)

I'm with you on this one & wishing I had a stash (that wouldn't last long enough to be called a stash)

Good luck to everyone going for and interview and to all the Mothers out there if we could live on guilt we wouldn't need whoopsies and I would be the size of a barn door :rotfl::rotfl:

    That is so true!

I have not watched the news today as I am fed up with the advent calendar of Euro doom and I much prefer my advent to be filled with chocolate.

Trying hard not to, but I tend to listen to R4 most days so it is difficult to miss. I'm kind of fascinated & terrified in equal measures - anyone else like this?

I may treat myself to a couple of hours book reading tonight as I havn't had chance for a few days.

I'm on Little Men (again - it is so nice to go back to what appeared to be happier days).

I wonder if you could freeze dried yeast as you can with fresh?? Would it last then??

    Puzzling

I use the Doves Farm dried yeat & keep it in the freezer. Lasts for ages & I've not noticed any deterioration in my bread. Think the last pack I had was open for 9 months.

Lizzyb1812 - my smallest losf uses 300g flour & is quite a lot smaller than the large (uses 450g). In my BM 200g would probably give a loaf the height of a madeira cake (Sainsbug's cheap one obviously!)
And I find that looking back at you gives a better view, a better view...

I am working (yes, really!) and a bit of on line christmas shopping and have to nip out in a mo - think i'lll stick with i-tunes rather than radio as i can skip over the emotional ones.

I had a tough first term at Uni, but got through it and the next 41/2 years were the time of my life (4 1/2 - cos a failed a year having too good a time  - no regrets :D)

Also a heads up to everyone about a scam which was perpetrated on a neighbour of a poster on another forum I hang out on. Tell everyone about this, because even 'doing what you think' would be the right thing didn't help!!!!

"My neighbour (74) got a call from his bank asking for his bank details as they think somebody has been trying to hack his account. He said he wasn't happy giving out his details and they said they understood, but it was urgent, so could he call back to the bank himself and was given the number to call. He still was suspicious so he looked up the bank phone number in the book and it was the correct number. He dialed it and they answered as the bank and asked him again for his details which he gave. He was robbed of his savings.

Turns out the original caller never hung up and the line was live. They played a dial tone and when they heard him keying in a numper the played a couple of rings then started the call again.
    Beware."

Good time to remind anyone you know who might still think a call from the bank was important, that they should be very very careful!

Hugs and deep sympathy with daughters at university and stress transferrance from another Mum who has/is there and has/is doing the same.

And I'm with you all the way ref the olympics spending and cut backs everywhere else. makes me want to scream it's so unfair. Man on the radio last week was commenting on how people who live and work in London should not expect to get to work or home at their usual times during the olympics and should therefore plan an alternative mode of transport or "perhaps plan to stay in the city, have a nice meal and go home later" ....for crying out loud what financial world does he live in? and now cancer patients (amongst many others I am sure) are expected to help pay for it. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr......:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

    Group hug?

Trouble with DD is this is final year (of 4) and they are all heaping work on her at once. I told her to talk to her tutor, which she's going to do. Sixth form did this to DS, each teacher insisted their work was 'most' important, they do not communicate, and all the deadlines are same day! :( Something has to give, some 'unmarked' work needs to hold off 'til the Xmas Hols.
