  • For years to many doctors would tell you if you had a condition that caused pain but wasn't life threatening, it won't kill you so you should be able to cope. Only now are they realising that constant pain can cause you a lot of harm and subsequently kill you, although its not pain that would be put down as cause of death so they are still slow at helping you deal with it ( don;t just mean pills) as NHS isn't exactly into preventative medicine.

    Right rant over

Hugs to all in pain, if pain gets really bad try and hot bath or shower and d**m the expense for once as even though it will not have a long lasting effect it will give you relief while you have it, and sometimes that is enough to keep you sane.

I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round

Good finds starsandmoon. I am vowing after the new year to only buy my clothes from charity shops. I'm not sure of my reasoning yet - it should be to save money but I have noticed even charity shop prices have increased.

Also, I am planning to wear more in the way of thick tights and skirts. My reasoning is that tights are not expensive to replace (or don't need to be if you're careful where you source them)and only take up a small space when washing. I'm taking a leaf out of my grandma's book and wearing a skirt for a few days...... come the new year anyway - I only have two skirts and one doesn't fit! So, my charity shop finds will be dresses and skirts (age appropriate!)

I can't warm up today. The tumble dryer is such a good thing for me as it now means I only have the living room radiator on to keep that area warm as opposed to the whole house for washing drying purposes. I'm just about to sit by it and have a cuppa before the trip to school.

Had my sister over today. She's bleating on about how the government won't allow mortgage rates to increase as that would risk a whole lot of people losing their homes and a big demand on emergency social housing which isn't there. I didn't have the heart to tell her it's out of any bodies hands what is going to happen and that I think a huge rise in mortgage rates may be likely. I mean what do you do in that situation? Warn her or worry her? After all nobody knows. I said keep your pennies close to your chest, be frugal and be savvy with your money. On the flip side she's spending £30 per week on fresh fruit and veg, whereas my little ones are eating frozen and tinned F&V. I feel a bad mum in comparison but I can't spend like that. We eat fresh bananas and satumas, cucumber and tomatoes as snacks but the rest is either, like I say, tinned or frozen. The only veg I buy now is if it is in the meal plan. Fruit and veg is a staple, a necessity for health, not something that should be scrimped on. Oh get over myself. We get plenty of veg in our meals, we just can't snack on nice fruit that's all. Long gone are the days where the fruit basket is full for all to help themselves whenever they want. At the end of the day, she has more disposable income than I do so I shouldn't be comparing. I should think myself lucky that gradually I'm learning and altering to reflect the money coming in. Should it drop further we'll cope all the same.

I know my post is all over the palce. Just like my head - see where my username comes from now lol ;)

    ta..
Am having a monster toothache at the moment..
Lost a filling a while ago, but didn't go to the dentist because of the costs. I know, I know.. I shoudl have had it sorted but I figured it would be ok if I kept it clean..
well it's not okay.. it started as a nagging pain that I could handle.. then it got worse and up to a point where I thought I was over the worst of it and that would be that.

Today.. I can barely see straight with these bouts of pain shooting through my jaw and up my face.. it is so sore I could cry.

So I phoned the dentist.. he can't see me till thursday.. I've already nearly overdosed on every painkiller in the house.. so it's going to be fun I guess.. And thursday is a work day for me. If I don't work, I don't get paid, so this flaming tooth is going to cost me double.. the dentist's bill AND loss of income.

    I really hate money...
    I really do.
And I HATE the government who changed the plipping health insurance system here in Holland. They promised it would all get cheaper due to free market effects.. but it hasn't. On the contrary. Prices have gone through the roof!.. and basic health insurance will not cover dentistry if you are over 18. The only way to get it covered is to take out an extra insurance which is far too expensive for us.

Forgotten who wanted the light up alarm clock, but is this one on Amazon cheaper at £25.99? Also here in different colour same price, great reviews. Am considering one for DH as he is a pain to get up in winter! If you don't need the ipod and FM radio bit in the lidl one this looks like a better deal and you'll know it's well reviewed. (Not sure I agree with their blurb where it says ideal room temp is 20-23 degrees C, I prefer a much colder bedroom and my heating is never on at more than 17!)

ETA, looking over it maybe the lidl one would be better, has a radio and looks pretty sturdy. Might get DH one...

Stocked up on 10 tins of tomato puree at Asda, also 4 tins of smart price tuna. It can't be too bad and will be nice in sandwiches for the kids instead of ham, as I am finding the cheap sandwich ham is just yuck!

I'm pretty sure I've read that frozen veg are preserved at their prime/peak of vitamins and that in that respect they are as healthy as any cooked veg. So don't beat yourself up over that one! As long as your kids are eating veg you are doing well!

Have you got an Aldi near you? Cos' their weekly special tend to be seasonal fruits and veg and they are REALLY good value... this weeks special were 49p a packet. I also treated myself to some grapes as they were only £1.19 (and they were from Greece so I was bolstering the economy LOL) I long since stopped buying grapes as they were too expensive, but I can't manage much fruit these days as the old gnashers aren't as sharp as they were, and the cheaper fruits are the worst to manage. If you eat seasonally you are also getting good nutrition. Half this 'decent fruit' that's been shipped all over the globe is stored for an eternity before you get it, so I['d be quite dubious about how much 'better' it is for you than a good old British pear in season!

Good idea about the tights! I've just bought a pair to see if a really long top I've not got anything to go with can be pulled off with tights and a pair of boots. I think I 'may' be too old :D but I'll give it a go.

  • beccatje--hope your toothache gets better x

fuddle--have you tried sainsburys tinned pineapple? its about 16p a tin and I take 1/2 of one to work in my packed lunch, cheap and good for you so 8p a portion. Nowt wrong with tinned or frozen but I agree F&V has gone up a lot.

I too hate Tesco but love Lidl! I do my weekly shop at Lidls now and we eat everything from there, some of the stuff is better than 'named' brands.

A bit of good news for me today, I found out I passed my open university course so have technically got a degree but doing another course after xmas to get the hons. Double whammy as work paid for 2 courses before they shut the door on funding (I got in just in time) :)

Of course interest rates are going up. The question is when. Quite frankly if she hasnt factored in a rise already then she needs a swift boot. But somehow I doubt she would listen to you.

It has happened before and will happen again. And you are most definitely not a bad mother so pack that one up too! :D;)

Ragz - I don't know if all co-ops do this, or if you have one near you but in ours they have boxes of ham 'trim' that are £3.89 for 700g. If you hunt though sometimes the box is full of lovely slices, or the knobby end off a ham. Sometimes it's all little bits, but I freeze these into bags for use on top of pizzas or in soups etc.
