The mad pie ladies are on the Preparing for winter thread ;)

I've seen reports from US, farmers are being sued for thousands of $$$ and in many cases being put out of business by the companies growing GM crops (Del Monte is a big one) if any of the gm plants escape into the other farmers field - windblown or self seeded, makes no difference; big businesses are determined to take control over what food is grown. There was a big campaign for saving seeds a while ago as more and more seeds that are sold are the F1 hybrids (or whatever) and you can't use seed from them the following year :(

Yep..this is what scares me most I think. Where will it lead to? Where will it end? Will we be governed by companies instead of elected governments? .. :(

And I got nettles by the yard, so would love to know how to make some thing useful out of them rather than just cursing the wretched things as I strim them to death! (but they are good for the wildlife,so I do leave a patch standing proud)

Nettle soup, and add a small amount to all soups and stews, pure vitamin C chips :)

I hate to be seen standing up for Tesco, but I buy their value mozzarella at 44p for 125g and it's fine. They seem to have a big selection with a lot of variation in pricing... http://www.tesco.com/groceries/product/search/default.aspx?searchBox=mozzarella
though I am still reeling in shock from the 23p increase in the yogurts I buy DH, that's 23p up in a WEEK! I didn't buy them this week of course...

That's the problem. They are not consistent. Apparently, they have 3 levels of store and price accordingly. So if you live in an affluent area you will be stuffed at level 3. In this Tescos the value range is few and far between. Yet go 10 miles down the road and it's a whole new ball game.

You really do have to be on the ball when shopping in that store as if you just wandered around buying the same things you wouldnt even notice the increases until check out.
I am just pleased they havent managed to take over my town yet (where I actually live not work). We have Morrisons, Lidl and Waitrose is coming in the spring.

Has anyone seen ChocClare recently? She has been very quiet.

    Totally agree.
  • Ooh a new thread, havnt posted for ages although have lurked a lot. My finances have suffered greatly by wage cut in work, changes in tax credits and ex losing his job so no maintainence. Works out at a £200 a month cut  Luckily I have a second job and Ive been getting extra work as a lot of people took voluntary redundancy and they suddenly found themselves with no staff and a recruitment freeze. This has really saved me although it wont last forever so stocking up and saving what I can. My laundry cupboard is heaving and I have a lot of pasta.

Have had anti social neighbour problems too but these are being rectfied. Live in quite a rough neighbourhood so lots of drugs etc and there is a war at the moment between the dealers and the police. Oh the joys.
I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round
  • Morning ladies

Could have throttled DH this morning  I have not slept through the night or had more that four hours sleep since Halloween. First bad tooth then sciatica. Well last night I had two glasses of wine, ate everything in sight and slept through til 7 and I still didn't want to get up. No pain so I thought I would kick the *ss out of it and have a lie in. DH decided to get a pair of trousers out of the bed drawer which fell off the runners and he then proceeded to shake, pull, tug, swear at the drawer while I was laid in the bed and he wondered why I sat up in bed resembling the exorcist :rotfl::rotfl: He is lucky to still be alive I tell you ;)

Must find something productive to do instead of sitting here plotting revenge :p

  • Just seen the post regarding "rough neighbourhoods"

I have lived all over and DH is a little bit of a snob as he has only lived in good neighbourhoods. We live in a nice, low crime village and people who live here (people with money) have no idea how other people live or what they have to go through on a daily basis.

We stayed at a friends house in a city and DH was shocked to see all the police, police helicopters, people dealing on the street corners etc.

I lived on a "rough" council estate years ago and there was a drug problem then but you also had the "salt of the earth, give you the shirt off their back type people.

When I lived there all the young people on the dole used to go and work cash in hand on the land etc. you would see the "gangers" pick them up early in the mornings and drop them off late at night. I think when the government clamped down on cash in hand work it left a lot of people with little else to do or ways to make money. I am not saying cash in hand work I right but I know a lot turned to dealing drugs to supplement their dole.

Did anyone else notice this?? or is it just where we live??

Misspent youth as a smoker who wasn't always able to smoke indoors meant I learned early how to light a match even when it was blowing a gale. You know how some people hold a pen with their thumb and two fingers not just the index finger on the barrel of the pen? Hold the match like that as it gives it more support like that. Hold the matchbox between thumb and index finger on the ends so that your other hand forms a big C shape. Light the match by striking it towards you rather than away then quickly move it into the shelter formed by the matchbox and your hand to give it a chance to start burning properly
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
