When I moved 2 years ago, one small van, 2 men, 5 miles, cost £500 and I still had to give a tip!

To be honest, I think it's worth it, because it's such hard work to move on your own. So stressful. I've vowed never to move myself again. The first time I did it completely on my own, had no money at all, and the new people were moving in as I was still moving out!

    Hi Kate

I was just a bit surprised as I don't think we have that much to move - 1 large sofa, large bookcase and dropleaf table from living room, small chest of drawers, small dresser and a glass fronted cabinet from bedroom, under counter fridge and under counter freezer, and a fair few boxes of varying sizes. Oh and 6 ikea blue bags of clothes and bedding - does that sound a lot?

He made a big deal of it being a two-day move, but to me there is no difference if they pack the lorry the day before - just an extra trip back to the depot.

Will ask them for a 'small moves' quote - on website up to 10 items was just over £400 + vat etc. If we can hire a van for all the boxes it will be a lot cheaper.

Yes it sounds like one heck of a lot!!! We stuffed one of the big Pickfords lorries to the gunwales. And half filled the other...

I think the round trip is the deal breaker. If you need to hire try this end??? Robins in Cardigan are very reasonable. We've hired a transit from them a couple of times.

    :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Rant alert : I woke up this morning when OH left for work (nothing new there hes not exactly quiet) it was four thirty. I was struck with a feeling of foreboding and went down to make sure everywhere locked up, at which point I realised car keys were not there, so I text him and called him asking where he had put them. No response, sat up waiting for reply assuming he would check his phone before walking into work - still nothing kept trying, phone switched off. gave up

Roll on seven oclock when kids get up - we search for keys, no sign, had to call my dad and arrange lifts for kids to school. Called work itself (wont answer phone before 7.30am) he didnt pick up, had to get security to tannoy him, he comes on and says, yeah they are in my pocket. Will bring them back.

No apology and its not the first time, he is so lacksidaisical about keys its unbelievable, arrives home still no apology just breezes in.
So the episode today has cost us at least an hour and a halfs pay, an extra gallon of petrol and blood pressure sky high, does he seem bothered??

There are some days when not only is he no help - he is a plain hinderance.

    Sorry for the rant.

Am now absolutely exhausted having not got to bed till one thirty (DD17 having boyfriend issues) and then up at four thirty, really busy day here again, and have parents eve for DD5 tonight - may need caffeine through IV to stay upright! :D

Have almost finished party stuff but need some little girlies bracelets (cheap ones) if any one has any ideas ??

Beautiful day here and if only I had a washing line I could actually dry washing outside - its got to be next on list getting a washing line fitted. Must put scaffolding ole on shopping list.

    :) Morning all.

Mrs Chip, looking at the items you've listed (although having to guess at the size and quantity of the boxes) that would all fit very comfortably into a 7.5 tonne Luton box van with a tail hoist. The IKEA bags of textiles would sit on the overcab part very nicely. The going rate for one rented in my city is £70 a day and experience tells me that they'll do 20 mpg laden and against the wind, a bit more running empty.

    I've moved a lot and helped a lot of other people with their moves and developed this as a rule of thumb;

Student (i.e. contents of 1 room = long-wheel base Transit or similar).

Small flat (the usual 3 big kitchen appliances, bed, sofa, misc furniture and boxed and bagged stuff) = 1 trip in a Luton.

Multi-bedroom house = torch the lot and restart at the other end with the insurance money.:p Only joking!

Of course, costs will be different where you are and there may be issues that you need to hire the muscle-power to get the stuff on and off a vehicle, although those tail hoist thingies on the Lutons are excellent. Even strapping lads don't want to be risking their backs doing vertical lifts with appliances. The ones I've hired all seem to come with a sack-trolley as standard, which is fantastic, and straps to secure your furniture to the side rails inside.

Lutons aren't as cute to drive as Transits (I covet Ford Transits the way sane people covet sports cars) but they're perfectly feasible even if you're normally a car driver.

You could hire a Luton for a week for a few hundred in most parts of the UK. HTH.

Oh, sometimes when I've had to go a long way I've managed to hook up with someone who wants something moved in the opposite direction and we've shared the fuel costs, could it be possible that someone wants to do Wales-London and would be delighted to split costs with you?

Anyway, best of luck with the move.

Nothing much going on at the homestead; I go to work and come home again but I will be having a long weekend with the family, first time we've been together since Crimble, and that will be great. I try to convince them that I only visit to make a fuss of the cats but I don't think they believe me.......:) They're going to slaughter a fatted chocolate cake and bake me a calf. Errmmm, I may have misheard that bit on the phone.

    :hello: Hello 2ba3c.

Enough nonsense, need to grab another cuppa before heading down the salt mine for another shift. Hope everyone has a good day. Laters, GQ x

ETA kidkat random stuff like cheapy kiddies jewellery is sometimes in the 99p Store and Poundland. Also, pick 'n' mix type places sometimes have edible bracelets, might that possibly be an option?

Yayy, I love this day - I always feel like I have survived something. And don't anyone tell me that it can be cold / still snow / it's still dark because you will find me with my fingers in my ears going "lalalalalalalala" :p

And because I have a little bit of the welsh in me, I can say "Dydd Gwyl Dewi hapus".

My OH says that I am "massively carp with keys" :rotfl:

We can't help it you know, it's in our genes. My mother used to quote her mother saying "where's my purse?":o

DD has gone off to school dressed as the Phantom of the Opera, mighty good it looks too. I made her a cloak with a couple of metres of black lining material, a couple of shiny buttons and some chain, and she has added school trousers, dad's shirt and bow tie and a hired "tails" jacket - that I made her contribute to. The fancy dress hire shop had a mask for 30p! I feel a bit mean making her pay some, but she is 15 and it's about time she learned that just cos she says she wants something doesn't make it so. I also made her go on the train to fetch them as the shop was in the next town. Apparently it was heaving - I think everyone in the area is dressing up for book day :rotfl:
I wanna be in the room where it happens
  • Morning all, thought I'd pop in.

Sorry for those in the wars - have a hug and a cup of tea, rant if you like and breathe!

Katie, I also work in a cafe, actually looking forward to the 'season' starting so I can go back! Don't think I could stand going back to an office either.

Feeling like Spring is around the corner, despite a grey day. Yay for your curlews Mardatha - hang on to those seeds though, bit early yet!

Was thinking this morning that we have come through the winter OK financially (fingers crossed) partly luck, nothing serious like car or boiler breaking down, partly mild weather so fuel bills lower, but other part I think has to do with thinking about each purchase, ie do I need it. Doesn't mean I never buy treats - sometimes I need a coffee out for my sanity. Other thing I did last year which helped was to pay up as many bills as possible in Summer when finances are a bit easier. All the OS stuff helps me a lot on a day to day basis too, so grateful for this site.
Wishing us all some good fortune and sunshine soon.

    Hello peeps

Byatt Blinkin ex's they always cause some drama don't they? and then we still get to pick up the pieces. I don't think it ever ends no matter what age the kids are.

Well I had my appointment at the skeletal and muscular clinic yesterday............. what a waste of time. The woman was not very nice and seemed to be taking it out on me what my doctor had said and that she deals with backs day in day out and she knows better  It ended with her saying she couldn't do anything til I had an MRI which the mobile unit was not there and because I can't keep as still I will have to travel to one that is an open scanner.

After her telling me she was "god" of the poorly back people she ended by saying I would have to go back to the docs to get some better pain killers as she isn't allowed :rotfl::rotfl:

Wasted hour of my life but I did call in at the local CS and bought an Edinburgh crystal bottle for a quid to put my EVOO in so it looks pretty in the bathroom :D

DH may be getting medically discharged so we are a little up in the air with what is going on really.

Thanks to everyone that posted lovely messages yesterday, I've had a full night's sleep now and feel so much better. He's been really good this morning but has just had a right strop because I won't let him bang the drinking glass together, I'm not giving in so we'll see how it turns out!

they were selling vanilla sugar in aldi on sunday, didn't clock the price but might be worth selling, my local reduces the specials that don't sell quite fast.

hugs to those that need them, my washing pile is calling. Will take a leaf out of vjsmums book *fingers in ears, lalala i'm not listening*
