Fuddle - As others have said take no notice it is pathetic. We do all know people like this and I think they are all pretty sad.

For those of us who were discussing taking vitamin D this is interesting. ;)

Good spot. Scary stuff. But I think I'd rather they had a proper information campaign and made Vit D available to everyone without force feeding. That way if there's any undiscovered side effects - like with fluoride in drinking water - people can be deciding for themselves.

fuddle we had a lot of older people in our WI but I did go to a lot of interesting talks. I believe you can go for a couple of taster sessions.

doesnt this defeat the point of money saving make it with water???

I live in part of the country that has the highest water rates in the UK, so cream may well be cheaper. :rotfl:

Having said that, if a small amount makes it more palatable then I may try it, or use a splash of milk. Pooch liked the water version a lot.

Obviously if I can only afford water, then water it is, I'll try and make it less sloppy.

edit, Fuddle I've never heard anything so ridiculous as giving £10 for a tooth!! 50p to a £1 is more than enough. Just ignore them or give them a withering look if you can't think of anything to say in the moment. I always think of things several hours later!! The mum who said what she did to your daughter was really horrible. And people tend to join in with the flock unfortunately. But I imagine they felt bad they didn't say anything nice, afterwards.

I loved the story of the young tooth fairy!

Materialism 3v3. That is the word I was looking for this morning when commenting on capitalism. I couldn't find it though but makes absolute sense. We live in an era where possessions make you in some people's eyes. We also live in a time where you must not get ideas above your station.... do not walk in the school yard in higher boots than me or my group will stare you up and down. Walk around in trainers and we'll leave you alone. Small minded and yeah, I am learning to ignore and move on. .
I think you may find, as the squeeze squeezes ever more tighter, that you should use the past tense ;) We have "lived" through an era where you were judged by your possessions - that can no longer hold true with such huge job losses, benefit cuts, travel, fuel and food hikes. What is happening now is a great leveller!

It's also not about being "confident" enough to stand up to them - it's more a case of ... you don't *need* to ;) Keep your dignity! For some people, rising to the bait merely justifies their patronising (and, let's be honest! Bullying!) behaviour.

Do look into your local WI; do not delude yourself in thinking that you will not come across this snobbery/holier-than-thou attitude in whatever walk of life you take. It is inherent in some people's make-up to belittle others simply so they feel they are better/more worthy than others (and to stop the spotlight from falling on them in any detrimental way). It's at the nub of all bullying from cradle to grave; from the playground to the boardroom.

The trick isn't to try and find a niche where it doesn't exist - the trick is to learn that it does exist and how you intend to deal with it on a personal level.

But, remember this: we are all born the same way, we all pooh the same way and we will all die one day ;) Makes no difference the cost of linen and toilet paper inbetween ;) So, when Mrs Snooty Shoes is looking down her nose at you .... imagine what she looks like constipated/severe trots - that'll put it all in perspective ;):D

Going to neighbourhood policing meetings is educational; an ST resident is made to feel very inferior as the snobby elements don't hestitate to make their feelings about us known.

What annoys me is that they feel having spent a half a million + on their "riverside apartment" (gag me with a spoon) somehow entitles them to more resources and attention from the Police than someone like me in a council flat 100 yards away. I feel like standing up and saying; "Scuse me, love, but I pay my council tax too, and police resources should go where they're most needed, such as around the Towers where we have a serious drug problem, not patrolling your private development because you saw a passing vagrant one day and got a bit scared. If you're that blinking nervous, you shouldn't have moved into the inner city."

Our ward covers inner city drug dens and riotsville, much privately owned and rented out, HA estates over varying qualities and a well-heeled posh bit.

The councillors divvy up the three police meetings and the meetings are rather different. Rampant middle England thinks that
Armageddon is situated the other side of the cross roads; much sniffiness about anything to do with that area. On the other hand I was with a couple of folks in the more interesting section and we had to dump some stuff on my alloment; they had never been into the area, it was alien territory.

So we try to lower the barriers to understanding.

Fuddle - Check out the WI, but I know it can bit a bit of a 'status' symbol in some areas, you might find some of these horrible types are there too (I have a friend who discovered this when she joined).

Are there any groups in your area that are interested in self-sufficiency (not GQ style in the woods:rotfl:), we have one here aligned to the Transition Town movement, and they offer all sorts of groups that you can join, and their ideals are much more closely aligned to OS ways. Ours runs courses for people to learn to grow veg, work in willow, bake bread etc. It might be a bit hippyish for you, but certainly no materialistic views!

SOme wise words for us all there - thanks. I was trying to instil in my kids that because so and so shops in such and such shop doesn't make them chavvy / poor / a loser and who cares what people think anyway?

I just can't stand it when people are shallow enough to judge others on clothes, handbags, how much they spend on their kids or anything else. Live and let live, I say. (tho i suppose i am judging people who judge people!:D:D)

Finally got the ironing done, did it watching the strictly final :T I am a little bit in love with Harry McFly :o. Now off to tidy MIL / spare room so she can get in it on Saturday. Took kids to McD's for lunch - a rare "treat" and off to see OH in his carol service tonight in the freezing cold cathedral. SHould be festive though.

    Works do tomorrow
I wanna be in the room where it happens
  • Blimey Fuddle - if I'd given my kids that much from the tooth fairy they'd both be wearing dentures by now :D
Been to Worcester today and heard one middle-aged lady say to her friend "I never look at the price, if I like it I buy it" .... I blame Care in the Community and the Daily Mail.
Anyhoo, I am now officially Christmas Crackered and am locking myself away until it's all over!
    Normal people worry me.
  • Fuddle - There's nothing even remotely respectable about these inbred and ill bred invertebrates. It's a compliment to you not to be one of them.
