I quote from your earlier post: "Your attempt at humour is as pathetic as your intelligence."
That is blatant abuse i.e. an attack. Why descend to such a level?tommyknocker wrote: »Because a word or phrase is deemed offensive in one country, but not another, that is no just reason for someone to try and enforce the offensive view on another. Just like there is no reason for someone to try and enforce the non-offensive by return.
That is a reasonable viewpoint, albeit slightly strangely worded. I assume you mean something like the following:
"Because a word or phrase is deemed offensive in one country, but not another, that is no just reason for someone to try and enforce the view that the word is offensive on another person."
I have never suggested that.tommyknocker wrote: »Myself - and Azari I am sure - and the others on here who expressed a view that they did not believe the term 'Jap' to be offensive, are merely expressing a personal opinion. I am certainly no racist and as such I resent someone trying to force their views on me as being correct . . . for no other reason than their own belief.
I have never done so. Obviously you have not read my posts, and yet you feel justified to verbally abuse me in your earlier posts. And as for Azari, some of his insults that he has thrown at me are downright offensive.tommyknocker wrote: »Respect my opinion and I will respect yours.
Odd. As far as I am aware I have never shown you disrespect. However, you have insulted me. Mmm.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0 -

I have no grudge against you and you seem an intelligent person, but you still can't grasp it. There is no moral low ground here! What is right to one is wrong to another, and vice versa. It is not a criminal offence to refer to a Japanese person as a 'Jap'. Whether it is morally wrong is neither here nor there. So, with that established all parties are entitled to their opinion, but should not be actively seeking to push that opinion on to another.I assume that the "how shall we put it . . not of English descent" is aimed at me? I'm not offended by that - how can I be? I am after all, not English. Although I feel I have more than a reasonable grasp of the language.
It was not directly aimed at you at all. There are several 'non-brits' who have jumped on this thread with the sole intent of expressing distaste or even outrage at someone who would dare to use an 'abbreviation'. I am simply stating that greater umbrage is taken by these. Most of the bad-blood in this thread has come from one person refusing to accept what others think or believe and trying to tell them what to believe - and that tommyknocker has been my only gripe here. It is after all with each person his own conscious.
I don't think there is any 'bad-blood' here. It's merely two opposing factions (together with some fence-sitters) entrenched with their views and opinions. Neither wishing to concede ground.
A large part of the problem can be contributed to the fact that those halcyon days of yesteryear in Britain when a multitude of debatable words and abbreviations were acceptable, has now gone. The multicultural society we now live in, coupled with the PC-Brigade whipped up by government protocol, means you can't fart without someone kicking up a stink0 -

The moral low ground I was stating was nothing to do with the whole "Jap" issue - that has become a secondary issue to me now - I accept that some feel it's okay and others not. What has got me going was a total refusal on his part to acknowledge another view.
I was taught that in a debate it was good etiquette to never tell someone else that they are wrong when it is an opinion but to disagree, which is s different. I have been told that my opinion was wrong, accused of lying, of being racist and various other things. This does not lend itself to good debating. So I wasn't asking you not to defend Azari on his views, quite the contrary, but on his behavious and approach to others' views.tommyknocker wrote: »I don't think there is any 'bad-blood' here. I am not PC - those who know me would agree, but, as Voltaire or his biographer, Hall, said, I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it - and I will support those that I do not agree with if they are being bombarded by those who will not hear or respect them.
It simply came across in several posts on several sub-topics in this thread that his opinion is "I do not agree with what you have to say and I'll fight to the death to stop you from saying it.” Whether that is the case, I don't know but that seems to be the undertone.• "A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on."
• "Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen."

I disagree. Some of the abuse directed at me has been extremely unpleasant, such as calling me stupid, a twerp a whining idiot, and a racist.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0 -

You should know.I disagree. Some of the abuse directed at me has been extremely unpleasant, such as calling me stupid, a twerp a whining idiot, and a racist.
Try to be a bit more thick-skinned, or don't bother coming on forums trying to pull everyone's posts and viewpoints to pieces.
If you define being called a twerp or stupid as abuse and extremely unpleasant then there's really no hope for you.
It's your sort who have contributed the most to the underlying tensions of political correctness; perfectly illustrated by your infantile approach to everything said on here. "Mum, Johnny said I'm a fat pig. Mum, Johnny called me lazy. Mum, mum, tell him. Mum, mum, I'll tell dad on him".

I do not see why I should have to endure personal abuse from you, or anyone else, simply because I post on this forum. And for your information, were someone to publicly call me a racist (as has happened here) and my identity was known, then that would be libel and I could take them to court.
And as for "trying to pull everyone's posts and viewpoints to pieces", the opinions I have expressed have been very moderate, and expressed in a mild manner. I'm sorry you are unable to engage in discussion without resorting to verbal abuse and name calling.
It is quite clear that you have not read my posts: Please provide quotes from my posts to justify your statement that "It's your sort who have contributed the most to the underlying tensions of political correctness;".Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0 -
Tommy and Azari; How dare you not agree with the loony lefties and have exactly the same opinions as them!!
Love the way the PC Thought Police crowd act like Nazis. It amuses me no end.
Seriously though, I am so sick of this crap. Do these tedious half-wits not realise that their trendy, PC BS draws attention and credibility away from real instances of racism and discrimination. All they do is sow disharmony and resentment with their pseudo outrage while ignoring the real horrors going on in the world. What they are really doing is jumping up and down, screaming "Look at me, look how moral and right on I am! I am standing up for these people who I secretly feel are inferior to me and therefore needful of my protection"

If you read through carefully you will find that the main issues here have not been that "He doesn't agree with me" but "He won’t let me have my opinion" and I'm not referring solely to me and the last couple of posters here, but those (and any) that he did not agree with - and won't respect those people’s opinions whilst insisting that the world respect his.
This thread went way off the original question and way off the argument that developed and ended up a battle of wits with a person who resorted to foul language and insults whenever someone disagreed with him, rather than demonstrate a better argument!
So, in a calm and polite manner, I will ask that you don't follow down the same line as him.• "A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on."
• "Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen."

Such a sad, sad, thread. As is so often the case, a few PC thugs are setting the course of race relations back with their intransigence and insistence that only they can be right. You need to calm down mate. You sound like a mental
Yet how much real compassion has he? How much does he really care about people feelings? Not enough, apparantly to understand how deeply offensive the term 'a mental' is to those who suffer from, or have family members who suffer from, mental illness.Shevchenko01 wrote:Can I ask you, how much of this thread have you read?
Enough to see that you have lied on more than one occasion and are prepared to twist the truth beyond all recognition to get your way, reversing the plain fact that it is you and your cohorts who are the ones insisting that your opinion is the only one that can be correct and hurling the accusation of racism against anyone who disagrees with you.
Earlier in the thread someone characterised you as bully boys and I think s/he got that just about right. Sadly, I have seen your sort too many times before. Insisting that your belief is the only acceptable belief and savaging anyone who dares to disagree with you.0
