Advice on a fiction book for a 9 year old girl

Hello

I'd like to buy a book as a small present for a 9 year old girl but I don't really know what would be approperiate. Initially I thought a Jacqueline Wilson book would be ok but having just googled I've seen that some of her books are a bit saucy (apparently one has the word sl*t which is obviously not approriate for a 9 year old).

So any Mum's out there with any advice?

Many thanks

My daughter is seven and loves to read, she has read loads of Jaqueline Wilson and I have always had a bit of a problem with them but she loves them! Some of them are def for older kids ie Girls in love, but the others are very popular and I can't deny that something about J wilsons writing just appeals to young girls. I sometimes feel that the unrelenting grittiness of her books may be a bit much, but my daughter reads so much I think she gets a good balance.

She curenntly love a series of books by Lauren St John called the White Giraffe series, think they are set in a safari park in Cape Town. Also, Emily Windsnap series was popular. She also loves Harry Potter books, and some Enid Blton like the St Claires books. I find Amazon great for recommending books similar to stuff she has enjoyed. But really, if you want to get her something she will love I reckon Jaqueline Wilson all the way!
  • I just got my daughter (8) Enid Blyton's Famous Five set (of 10 books) from The Book People for £10. She seems to be enjoying them so far...

Thank you. Lots of great ideas.
  • I used to enjoy the Roald Dahl books at that age, being able to read them my self, or pony books, by KM Peyton or the Pullein Thompson authors. HTH
You never know how strong you are until you have no other option.
  • I remember when my sister was around nine she used to read books like Felicity Wishes, Rainbow Magic (another fairy one!), Judy Moody, and the Diaries of a Wimpy Kid are also quite good, as far as I can remember nothing overly saucy in those! Also could suggest some Enid Blyton, like Famous Five, Twins At St Claires, Malory Towers, ect (which I read when I was nine and younger!)

    Hope this helps :)

  • I was also going to say Enid Blyton any of her school series- St Claires or Mallory Towers, I couldn't put them down at her age! Oh and 'The Secret Seven' of course. I also loved the Narnia Chronicles, still will re-read them now. My Mum gave me one of her all time favourite childhood novels (and sadly I can't recall the author) but it was called 'Felicity Dances' a marvellous story about a young girl going to ballet lessons and finally, finally dancing at Covent Garden. It really came across as true.
  • Inkheart by Cornelia Funke. First of a trilogy. Fantasy and a great read. See reviews on amazon.

Or Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder, first of 7 books. Loved them as a chikld and still re read now.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once
