I used to love The Babysitters Club books, but they don't seem widely available anymore (to be fair, I am now 30 :rotfl:). Amazon have a few here...

What's her reading age ability and is she just 9 or closer to 10? My DD is 8.5 and though she has an advanced reading age she is 'young' for her years, so books she is capable of reading don't interest her due to content.
What she does like is some of the Roald Dahl books, the rainbow magic collection, Diary of a wimpy kid, Horrid henry, My naughty Little sister and Charlotte's web.
DS around 9/10 was reading the Harry Potter and Percy jackson books.0 -
Just googled and discovered 'Felicity Dances' is by Arnold Haskell and available mostly 2nd hand from Amazon and many other sellers. Apparently based on real life experiences, maybe that's why it stayed in my mind as such a great read. Not a 'childish' childrens book at all.0

I have a boy, but he and also his female friends really liked Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events at that age.0

DD loved a series called Jane Blonde at that age, they were a female spy from memory. She read them all anyway.

She'd gone through all the Dahl/Blyton books long before her 9th birthday but all are recommended. Also the Phillip Pullman series (Amber Spyglass etc on which the movie Golden Compass is based) were brilliant for young and old.0 -
Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfield.
A Little Princess by Frances Hodgeson BurnettI try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once0 -

Hello
I'd like to buy a book as a small present for a 9 year old girl but I don't really know what would be approperiate. Initially I thought a Jacqueline Wilson book would be ok but having just googled I've seen that some of her books are a bit saucy (apparently one has the word sl*t which is obviously not approriate for a 9 year old).
So any Mum's out there with any advice?
Many thanks
FA
The kids I teach love books by Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl, !!!!!! King Smith and Dr Zeuss. All suitable for 9 year olds.
I would recommend not making it a total surprise. Check the childs reading ability with the parents, if you are not sure of it. Then you can be assured that the child will be able to enjoy it by themselves and not struggle to read it.0 -
My daughter LOVES these http://www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/qs_product_tbp?storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=100&productId=256761&searchTerm=dork+diaries (Apparently they're like the Wimpy Kid books but more aimed at girls, they are in diary form and have illustrations and doodles to break up the text)she also loves the Judy Moody series, Sleepover Club and Jacqueline Wilson (there are some for under 12 and some for older ones, but its hard to tell what's what from the cover!). The David Walliams books are a huge favourite although she hasn't read Gangsta Gran yet. Ummm...oh she adored the St Clares books but can't get into Mallory Towers so far. Lauren St John and Michael Morpurgo and Cathy Cassidy are other authors she likes.0

Do you know what she's into? School stories, fantasy, real life, horses, ballet, etc etc ;-) I loved Diana Wynne Jones & Joan Aiken, both fantasy.0
