Advice on a fiction book for a 9 year old girl

  • I reccomend any J Wilson for a 9 year old bar the girls in love/out late/ under pressure series as they are for teens. Also Cat Mummy is a little too young for a 9 year old.

I also reccomend William Nicholson, amazing series which I read age 10 about a world where exams mean everything. Amazing.

Michael Morpurgo is excellent also even if someo f the material is slightly challenging due to the context.

Malorie Blackman is also an excellent choice except noughts and crosses series as this does involve some adult themes e.g. rape, sex and terrorism

I used to love The Babysitters Club books, but they don't seem widely available anymore (to be fair, I am now 30 :rotfl:). Amazon have a few here...

    I used to LOVE those!

Also Enid blyton, the St claires, Mallory towers etc.

And also goosebumps, Point horror. And Judy Blume was one of my favourites.

Be careful tho, don't expect the child to like a book just because you did. I did all that, Enid Blyton, Little House, Narnia, Little Women, the only one that did take her imagination was the secret garden.

I'd stick with something like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. :D
But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more

    I've been Money Tipped!
Nancy Drew and Judy Blume was what I loved that age.

If she's a Harry Potter fan, try Charlie Bone. Or H.I.V.E.

Go into Waterstones or your local library - both would be more than happy to help.

Judy Blume was another favourite, but some would be a bit old for a 9 year old - there's one about a girl getting her period, and one about a first relationship (Forever) - definitely not suitable for a 9 year old, especially page 72.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

My girls love The Wheel on the School by Meindert DeJong.

I read this at school and guessed they would like it!

I'd completely forgotten this book! I read it at school too and have now ordered a copy for my daughter. Thanks for the reminder.
  • Definitely another vote for Ballet Shoes!

I loved it and then my two loved it, in fact one of them borrowed it and hasn't returned it....

  • These are a favourite of my DD at the moment http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_1_12?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=invisible+fiends&sprefix=Invisible+fi. The author is a poster on Mse and he sent signed book plates to everyone who purchased his books. They're a bit scary but kids love them, I think he won an award for it.
